"Go eat a hamburger!"
"You look anorexic."
"Do you even eat?"
I hear these things almost daily, and I'm tired of brushing it off as a joke.
People like me aren't like this on purpose. High metabolism is common, especially in younger people. I'm 19 years old and a sophomore in college, and the heaviest my weight has been is 106.4 lbs. My weight has fluctuated between 94 lbs. and 104 lbs. since middle school. I don't know why I have high metabolism. Multiple things can cause high metabolism, ranging from your DNA, stress, and even smoking.
High metabolism sounds like everyone's dream, but in reality it really shouldn't be. Especially in women, high metabolism is not as fun as it sounds. Women with high metabolism are constantly accused of starving themselves or excessively working out to be that skinny. No one wants to be accused of having an eating disorder. Those are serious and should be treated as such. It can also affect periods and make them irregular. Building muscle becomes close to impossible because the fuel from your food burns off so quickly.
Some people might disagree, but I know a lot of people that compare telling a skinny person to go eat a burger to telling an overweight person to go eat a salad. There is never an excuse to tease someone because of their weight. Whether someone is overweight or underweight, it's scrutinizing and almost disrespectful. It is hard to change your weight, whether its gaining weight or losing weight. Don't pick on people who are having a difficult time with it.
To answer the question, yes, we do eat. I can eat junk food all day and almost never gain weight. However, it is never that simple with high metabolism. We can't eat junk food all the time, because our bodies still need good nutrients to survive. We sweat more, our skin is oily, and we're constantly eating so we don't pass out from lack of nutrients.
So please, don't bash me for being a size 00. High metabolism is a thing, and I can't help that.
