It has been almost 2 months since Undertaker had his final match with Roman Reigns. The dust is clear, and chatters have still been going around about Sting Vs Undertaker. A year ago, Sting proclaimed retirement from in ring competition after being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. After retirement, he still expressed desire to go against Undertaker. Sting understands what is truly riding on a match with Undertaker, and what it means for both men. Unfortunately it may be too late for the match to happen now. The match has earned a name as fantasy match of the century. It is arguably the best match to never happen in a WWE ring ever.
Undertaker took the wrestling world by storm the moment he first set foot in a WWE Ring. Sting took the National Wrestling Alliance, and World Championship Wrestling by storm as well. These two men took two different paths, and didn’t cross at all throughout the nineties. Sting finally made a historical debut in a very short lived stint in WWE, and was still on a different path than Undertaker. Some may see Sting Versus Undertaker as the biggest match to never happen, but do they truly understand why? Whenever you are having a conversation about these two possibly fighting, more than likely it is making your heart race. What makes this match so intriguing to think about? Why do we feel the need to talk about it so often? If you are one of those people to say that the match is big because of their dark personalities, then you are missing out on the bigger picture for why the match is big. It goes way beyond the historic dark personality of Sting, and the hard-hitting man in black known as Undertaker.
Sting was the leader of World Championship Wrestling, and was the face of WCW. You could not have a conversation about WCW without talking about Sting. He fought battles and was the heart and soul of the company. What made his run special, was the fact he kept giving his all. The darkest days of the company came, and he stayed with it until the very end. When WCW was bought out by WWE, it was earth shattering, and changed the landscape of professional wrestling forever. Sting’s duties in WCW were done, and he chose not to sign with WWE at the time. He had personal convictions that kept him from signing, but he made a powerful statement when he didn’t sign with WWE. His job was done in WCW, and he dissolved as quickly as the company. Sting enjoyed success elsewhere, but his convictions haunted him for almost twelve years before he finally made his debut in WWE.
Undertaker quickly became the heart and soul of World Wrestling Entertainment. He became the leader that WWE needed. He carried an undefeated streak at Wrestlemania, which is the pay-per-view that WWE fans wanted to see the possibility of a Sting Vs Undertaker match, but Undertake had convictions much like his counterpart Sting. Undertaker slowed down as years went by, and was finally coming close to retirement. He mainly competed at Wrestlemania, and refused to miss the show no matter what his final years in WWE. Undertaker was undefeated at Wrestlemania, until Brock Lesnar defeated the streak a few years ago, but while the streak was alive. Fans were raving for Sting to possibly become arguably the biggest battle of Undertaker’s career against his streak at the time. The streak has died, and Undertaker has now lost twice at Wrestlemania. Despite Undertaker losing twice at Wrestlemania, the dream match of Sting Vs Undertaker is still full of hype, just as it was when the streak was alive.
Now finally, we get to what makes it special, well look it all, similar personalities, hardworking, pioneers, former world champions. Undertaker and Sting ultimately have a legacy of their own. Many people hear the name WCW, and automatically they think of Sting, or when they hear Wrestlemania, they may think about Undertaker before anything else. These men carry the final load of WCW Vs WWE that has never been resolved. In the past years, there was The Rock Vs Booker T, and of course many years later Triple H Vs Sting. While both respective matches had a lot riding in it, it still didn’t seal the deal. The past years since WCW got bought out by Vince McMahon, there has been a lingering door that seems to swing wide open every few years of WCW alumni and conversation. ECW had closure and could do everything they can to bring the chapter to an end of their legendary run. Through the years with Booker T, Eric Bischoff, Goldberg, even the nWo was not enough to bring closure.
When Sting and Triple H happened years ago, once again WCW Vs WWE was happening for that match, but the closure of the war still isn’t there, even with attempts by commentators trying to build it up as the final showdown between WCW Vs WWE. Fans are still talking about it, and this is the final piece of the puzzle for closure not only for Sting and Undertaker, but WCW Vs WWE too. The two pioneers going at it, and the two men that made two separate companies what it is through leadership, and hard work is why this match is so important. Will we ever see it? The chances are very slim, but Sting still talking about it shows that he understands how big this match would be for the final chapter of WCW Vs WWE finally, after nearly 15 years. We can be sad that the match may not happen, but this match will go down in history as the biggest, and best match to not happen ever. The final thread of hope that Sting and many fans have may slip away after next year, but playing it in WWE games, and pondering the thought of all their accomplishments put together makes it the fantasy match of the century!
