I've been waiting ALL SUMMER to get back to school and even though I'm not there yet, I have less than two weeks! You would think after having to go through packing a first time that I would know what to bring and what not to bring back to my 10x15 dorm room that I also have to share with another person. Nope. Not a clue. In fact, I can guarantee that I will bring the same amount of things, if not more, back to school. Why? I couldn't tell ya, but I'll try to!
First of all: clothes. This should honestly be the easiest to pack because normally I bum it out and wear a t-shirt and sweats to class more than half of the time. WRONG! Packing clothes is actually impossible! There is the occasional day I might want to look nice for class, there needs to be at least one dress in my closet for job interviews, church, formals, fancy dates, etc., and do not get me started on how there needs to be something for me to where if I chose to go out. As sad as it might be, I can't always wear sweatpants. Obviously there's a dilemma. I don't want to take all of these clothes to school because they take up too much room, not only in the car to school, but in my closet at school. But the reality of it is that I am an adult and t-shirts and sweats aren't going to cut it, so I'll have to deal with small closet space.
Second of all: bedspread, furniture, appliances. This isn't so much a problem once you're at school, but is a problem when you physically have to put them into a car and manage to make room for everything else you have. Last year the bedspread was pretty easy because it was packaged in a box that you could open once you were ready to make up your bed. This year is different...I DON'T HAVE THE BOX ANYMORE! And let me tell you, I got the college bundle so I have everything ranging from pillows to a mattress pad so you would imagine without that box packing all of that is going to be rather difficult. On top of all of that, I also have a Keurig, mini fridge, futon, and some portable storage cubes! It's the fridge and the futon that are going to be the most difficult because THOSE DON'T HAVE THEIR BOXES ANYMORE EITHER! But if there's a will, there's a way, so we'll see how this plays out in the future.
Lastly: knick knacks and personal belongings. Listen y'all, I know these things might not seem important but they really are. My knick knacks and personal belongings are probably the most odd things for anyone who might walk into my dorm room, but they all have meaning behind them. They hold memories. Let's talk about my not one, but two styrofoam mannequin heads. I know what you're thinking, "Why?" Well in all honesty I wasn't going to buy one for $5 when I could buy 2 for $7. But let me tell you how much fun, stupid fun but still fun, my friends and I had with these mannequin heads. It might seem dumb now, which it truly is, but those mannequin heads will always make me think of the weird, crazy, fun times I had with my friends my first year of college. I have so many more knick knacks and I will be bringing all of them back to Loras simply because they hold memories.
So if you told me I had to take only one of these categories back to school with me I'd probably have to pick knick knacks because priorities. In all honesty, if I could just bring only one of these categories to school there would be SO MUCH room in the car! But all of these things help make my dorm room feel more like home and more like a comfortable atmosphere and to me all the stress of packing is worth that.
