Still Breathing

A few pieces of advice for the struggling college student.

College is all about learning to specialize in some sort of field, but it also teaches you a lot about life and the harsh realities of no longer being a little kid with no responsibility. The time you spend on a college campus is going to mold you into a different person, you’ll find out what sort of stuff you’re made of and it’s up to you what you’re going to do with that information. As a third year in college, I feel like I’m qualified to pass down some of the lessons that the past three years have taught me.

1. Go to Class.

I know that this one is a little overused, but it will seriously change your life. And by that I mean that it will change your GPA. Attending class lets you actually retain the information and not just stow it away for the test so that you can immediately forget it all afterwards. Go to class. It's not that hard.

2. Talk to the People in Your Classes.

Make friends with the people around you. Not only will you open up your social life, but you'll gain some serious study buddies. It might be awkward at first, but push through it and you are sure to make some of the greatest friends of your life.

3. Go Out with Your Friends.

College isn't all about studying. You've got to make time for fun, and going out with friends is sure to give you some memories that will last a lifetime. In order to make it through the stress that is a college career, you have to make sure you make time for fun.

4. Volunteer.

This one has really kept me sane. Nothing feels better than giving back to the city that you'll call home for the next four or so years. Look up volunteer programs in your area and get involved!

5. Talk to Your Advisor.

Your advisor's job is to help you, so take advantage of that and go see them! College courses can be confusing, and your advisor is a pro at guiding you through all of the confusion. Periodically make appointments so that you can make sure you're on the right course for graduation!

6. Do Your Assignments when You Get Them.

I'm going to include this one because I still struggle with it, myself. Trust me, you can save yourself worlds of stress by just finishing your assignments the day you get them. Procrastination is not your friend.

7. Call Your Parents, Your Siblings, Stay Connected.

Stay close to your family. College can get lonely when you're in a whole new city by yourself. Call your mom, your dad, or anyone that you think of as family.

8. Remember that You’re Still Breathing.

You're going to go through tough times. There will be days when you feel like dropping out and running back home to your parents. There be days when you feel hopeless. On those days you have to remember that you've made it this far and you're more than capable of making it through another day, another week, another year. You're still breathing, and that's worth celebrating.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:
