The common follow-up questions to announcing my major.

I have noticed a trend that happens whenever I tell someone new that I am an education major; this trend lies in the follow-up questions that I'm asked. I take such pride in wanting to be a teacher, and I am so excited to get to work with countless kids in the future, so these questions do not faze me.

1. So you'll really be in school your whole life?

It is so funny to me how people are shocked to their core that someone could ever want to spend their life in school with children. Children are so funny, smart and kind when given the appropriate outlet to share their thoughts; I want so badly to be constantly learning with them. So yes, I technically am planning to be in school for the rest of my life.

2. Why?

I was fortunate enough to have a great educational experience, which has led me to want to become a teacher. I want to be a teacher that encourages and supports my students because I think so highly of these adolescents. So yes, I want to be there for them during critical periods of their lives.

3. Oh god, wow, good luck.

I know that certain days will be difficult to get through, but I am sure that it will be a rewarding career. Even if I only impact one student, it will be worth it. So yes, I will need support throughout my career, but you will not scare me off with these comments.

4. What grade? ... MIDDLE SCHOOL?

Middle schoolers are going through so many changes at this stage in their lives: physical, emotional, mental, etc. So yes, I want to be there for them to support them.

5. But didn't you hate middle school?

I remember middle school being centered around "girl drama" and confusing friendships, but I do remember enjoying middle school. I was fortunate enough to go to an amazing school with great teachers which worked together to make this experience positive... or at least my recollection of it. So no, I don't remember hating middle school and yes, I think I can help others enjoy it as well.

I am so excited for my future, so you can't scare me off this path! And to all my fellow education majors, let me know if you have any other responses that I do not know of!

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.
