Seeking Positivity During A Tragedy

For my holy cross family during tragedy.

Seeking Positivity During A Tragedy

It was my senior year of high school, about a week before Thanksgiving break when tragedy struck the halls of my school. It was announced that a classmate of ours had taken his own life. On that day, you could hear a fly buzzing, it was completely silent in the usual rowdy halls of that high school.

The next day, sadness was still prevalent in my school but there was a glimmer of hope when other classmates put up sticky notes all around the school, all over the lockers and doors and cafeteria walls with positive saying. Things like "you are loved" "you are important" "you mean a lot to someone" surrounded our school during a time of tragedy. It brought a smile to all of our sad faces.

I remember this day not because of the grief everyone was filled with but because I was filled with a full heart. A full heart to know a community can stick together during a time of sorrow and show each other that no one is alone. High school is a tricky place, it's a place where you try to find yourself but face many challenges along the way and to come into school that day with sticky notes surrounding me reminding me that I am not alone made my heart full.

No matter what you're going through in life, just remember the sticky notes that you can stick in places to remind yourself that you are loved and you have a purpose. This day is just a reminder that no one is alone in this crazy world and no one goes through anything alone. Remind yourself every day of this and be your own sticky note of positivity during a difficult time.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
