This past January, Disney Channel took us down memory lane - and simultaneously reminded us how old we are - with the "High School Musical 10 Year Reunion". A whole range of ages crowded round the TV to watch the hilarity and cringe worthy reminder of our 2006 selves, and we all had a good laugh at Zac Efron's "appearance." While this was all exciting, Disney followed up with even bigger news: the announcement of open casting calls for "High School Musical 4".
I know what you're all feeling: confusion, excitement, bewilderment, maybe even a little fear.
I mean, who doesn't want more gems like the incredibly moving "Bet On It"? Or the emotional roller coaster that is "When There Was Me And You"? Let's not forget, "We're All In This Together".
But, in this case, might it not be better to simply stick to the "Status Quo"?
The third movie was wrapped up nicely. Everyone got their happily ever after (except Ryan but we all know he ends up with Zeke.)
Gabriella and Troy weren't too far apart, Chad gets to shoot hoops, and Kelsey goes to her dream school to continue to write musicals with good music but some unclear plots. (I'm sorry but what the hell was "Twinkle Town" even about?) Overall, everything was wrapped up. They were stepping into the future and so were we. Ready to say goodbye and move on with our disillusioned concept of what the college admission process was actually like.
All I can envision is some sort of younger sibling/relative coming back and having some sort of Troy-like "athlete vs. musical theater" conflict, changed by some new comer who is ready to change everything.
Been there, done that, Disney.
Not to mention, going for that one extra sequel doesn't usually lead to much success.
(Ahem... "Mean Girls 2".)
As much as I would love to see more singing and dancing and general teen angst (though I will not be sad to see the mid-2000's fashion go) I think that "it's better by far to leave things as they are" and three movies are enough for this one. C'mon, we gotta work this out!
