6 Steps To Savoring The Last Weeks Of Summer

Yes, it's ending - but that doesn't mean you still can't enjoy it.

It's a harsh fact that has been haunting everyone's minds for the past few weeks now: it's August, and summer's clock is ticking away. Perhaps, like many teenagers, you haven't even realized summer had started, much less that it's almost over, and now you're scrambling to experience it - the memories, the relaxation, and all those good summery activities. But worry not! Read on to find out how you can make the most of the remaining few weeks of arguably the best season of the year.

1. Spend a day lying in bed.

Whoever said that each and every day needed to be packed with trips and shopping and eating and all those things that require action? Take advantage of the luxury of summer, and spend a day lying in bed (or at least sleeping in generously), reading, watching Netflix, or just staring at the trees outside. Take it all in.

2. Go on a road trip.

It can be with your friends or your family, and it can be long or short, but there's nothing like a good ol' road trip, whether it has a destination or not. It doesn't even have to be long - just spend a few hours cruising down the interstate, and feel the summer breeze through the windows.

3. Read a book

Yeah, yeah - we get it, summer reading for school can be annoying. But you don't have to put of reading just because you don't want to read that boring history novel for class - pick out a summer romance, or an action-packed story, and spend a few hours outside simply reading. I promise, you'll enjoy it.

4. People-watch

Because you definitely won't have time to do it during the school year. Bring a buddy or a family member, sit outside a café or go to the beach, and watch people. It's as simple as that! Make up backstories, imagine their lives, or even go up and talk to a stranger after guessing what they do as a living.

5. Bake a cake

Especially if you've never tried baking before, summer is the perfect time to try baking a cake. Look up a recipe or call grandma for hers, take out the flour and the eggs, and bake a cake! (Also, good luck!)

6. But most of all, just remember to relax and enjoy!

Don't feel pressured by all those movies and Instagram posts to have the most "epic" summer ever. You don't have to go to the beach, or drink under the stars, or have some amazing summer fling with a cute boy - just take a moment every day to appreciate the simple beauty of summer, and you're all set.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
