Steph Curry. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you’ve definitely heard his name if you’re a fan of the NBA. It doesn’t matter whether your favorite team is the Los Angeles Lakers, the Boston Celtics or even the Detroit Pistons. For the last two seasons, fans of basketball have been raving about the starting point guard for the Golden State Warriors. Why? He’s got mad skills, especially beyond the three point line. In fact, in 2013, Curry set the record for most three point field goals made in a season at 272. He then beat that record the following year in 2014 with 286. This season, he’s crushed that record by draining 361 threes so far, with only a few games left in the season. His talent and skill have led many to ask is he the best basketball player since Michael Jordan. But is Steph Curry the best player of all time? And are the 2015-2016 Golden State Warriors better than the 1995-1996 Bulls, that went 72-10 in the regular season and won an NBA Championship?
For starters, let’s look at Michael Jordan. He was the third overall pick of the 1984 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. He played until 1993, retired for a year, and returned to the NBA in 1995, and retired again in 1999. In his 13 seasons with Chicago, Jordan led the Bulls to an NBA Championship six times, all of them occurring between 1991 and 1998. Between 1986 and 1998, Jordan led the league in scoring for all but one of those seasons (1994-1995). He also won the league MVP award five times and the NBA Finals MVP award six times. During the '90s, Jordan was the player that most basketball loving kids aspired to be like. Basketball fans everywhere in America looked forward to watching the Bulls play, especially if they lived close to an NBA arena.
In the 1995-1996 season, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls finished the season with an astonishing record of 72-10, setting the league record for most wins in a season. That was also the season they set a record for the most consecutive home wins, but winning the final few home games of the 94-95 season and winning the first 39 home games of the 95-96 season. In the 1996 playoffs, the Bulls went 15-3 to win their fourth championship in six years. For the next 20 years, many people considered the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls team, led by Michael Jordan, as the best NBA team of all time. That belief was challenged when Steph Curry and the 2015-2016 Golden State Warriors team rolled around.
The Warriors started this season 24-0, setting a new record for the best start to an NBA season. This led many people to question if the Warriors would beat the 72-10 record set by the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls team. As of March 31, 2016, the Warriors sit at a 68-7 record. To surpass 72 wins, the Warriors need to win five out of their last seven games.
Many fans also wondered if the 2015-2016 Warriors team was better than the 1995-96 Bulls. Could the Warriors beat the legendary team in an actual game? Fans of the league are split on this question. Many say yes, and many say no. Charles Barkley, a former NBA player and current analyst, thinks that the 1995-96 Bulls would win, saying, “That Bulls team would kill this little team”. Others feel differently, and to prove it, they used the video game NBA2K16 to simulate a match between the Warriors and the legendary Bulls team. In most cases, the Warriors won.
So the question remains, is the NBA’s newest superstar Steph Curry better than Michael Jordan? Are the Warriors better than the '90s Bulls, especially the team that went 72-10? At this exact moment, that question can’t be answered and here’s why. Michael Jordan played 13 seasons with the Bulls and Steph Curry has only been in the league for six. Plus, the Bulls had two three-peats in 10 years, while the Warriors just won their first championship in 40 years. It’s simply too soon to be able to make an accurate judgement at this point. A decade or so from now, we will be able to look at what the Warriors will have done in that time and see if they were a true dynasty. As Tony Parker so eloquently put it, “They won six [titles] in eight years. So you have to give a little bit of time to that [Warriors] team to see how well they're going to do over 10 years, the longevity. Like us, the Spurs, we won five titles since '99. That's how you judge teams.”
For now, let’s enjoy Steph Curry’s talent while he’s still in the league. And as time goes by, we’ll be able to see how talented he, and the Golden State Warriors, really are.
