Steph Curry is the best basketball player on the planet. Sorry, LeBron James and all his fans, but “The King” needs to give up his throne. Steph Curry and his team, the Golden State Warriors, have revolutionized how basketball is played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This was shown in last spring’s NBA championship series when Curry’s Warriors beat LeBron’s Cavaliers. The Warriors played as a team of sharp shooters, without a true “big man” or center on the floor. Before last year, that tactic has never produced a champion. The Warriors won the championship and haven't looked back since.
This year has been an even better year for the Warriors and Steph Curry than 2015. Their numbers are off the chart. Each Warriors player's stats has increased at a dramatic rate. The leader of the Warriors, Steph Curry, is atop the team and is creating quite the comparison in the world of basketball.
It is, for the most part, common knowledge that Michael Jordan was the best basketball player of his generation. He dominated the game in college at the University of North Carolina, and then went on to dominate the NBA. He won six NBA championships, and five league MVP awards in fifteen NBA seasons.
He became an icon, putting his name on Nike shoes, being in all sorts of add campaigns and was even featured in movies. Jordan was the man, and since no one has come near the greatness that he had in the 1995-1996 season. Jordan, and his team the Chicago Bulls set record for the best win/loss ratio ever 72 wins, and 10 losses. The Bulls won the Championship that year and Jordan won MVP honors. The reason I’m bringing this up is because, the Golden State Warriors of 2015-2016 are on pace to beat the Bulls record, and Steph Curry is on pace to beat Michael Jordan’s record numbers. In the first 10 games of their respected great seasons, Curry burys Jordan’s numbers. That has been a foreshadowing of things to come for Curry. As of now, the Warriors are half way through the 2016 season; they have 42 wins and four losses. Curry averages just under 30 points a game. This record is on pace with the 95-96 Bulls outstanding win/loss ratio, and Curry’s numbers are blowing Jordan’s out of the water.
Curry leads the NBA in most categories. His numbers make him a strong candidate for the NBA’s MVP. He’s played lights out all year and continues to get better and better. He has surpassed the other great players of this current generation, and now I think is the time to speculate if he could be considered the best of all time.
Steph Curry is going to be a better player than Michael Jordan when his career is over. It may sound crazy to think, now, but I think Curry will win more championships and MVP awards than Jordan did. Why you ask? Because of the giant chip on his shoulder, and Curry's will and determination to always get better.
Curry played college basketball at Davidson University. This is unlike Jordan who played for the prestigious University of North Carolina. Curry made a splash in the college basketball tournament in 2008 when he took them to the "Elite 8" (the last eight teams remaining in division one basketball). He was still considered a player who wouldn't make a huge impact in the professional game, as many other college players from small schools flopped as pros.
Despite the uncertainty, Curry was drafted seventh overall by the Golden State warriors in 2009. Golden State had been a historically bad team for a long time, and looked for a spark in the young shooter, Curry. Curry made amazing plays for the Warriors, but they failed to make the playoffs in his first three seasons. The Warriors made it the next two years, but never progressed past the conference semi-finals. At this point the Warriors saw that if they want to win they had to build around Curry and the did that. The Warriors put together a team that fit to Curry, and last year they reaped what they sowed; they became champions of the league.
What sets Curry apart from Jordan is the desire to improve all the time without much extra attention. In Jordan's time, he was like a God. Everyone looked up to him, and Jordan relished being loved and performing well, but this also put a lot of pressure on him. Steph Curry doesn't have that pressure. Curry is looked up to, don't get me wrong, but he doesn't let that get to him. Curry a well spoken Christian, and wants to be a great role model for everyone who looks up to him. He continues to train as if all odds are against him, and wants to keep that chip on his shoulder as he tries to become the best ever.Curry's current season is giving Jordan's historic season a run for its money. He's leading a great team like Jordan did, and it doesn't seem like anyone can stop the Warriors from winning their second championship in as many years. I predict they will end the season with a better record than the 95-96 Bulls, and that the Warriors will win it all. This will start a Golden State Dynasty, and StephCurry will become even better than the great Michael Jordan.
