As a freshman in college, I found myself heavily intimidated by college parties. Now, as a slightly more adult sophomore, I've learned some tricks of the trade to stay safe, and have a fun time too!
1. BUDDY SYSTEM
We all know that any social event is better with friends, so why not make it fun AND safe by traveling in a group to all parties? Unfortunately, we live in a world where not everyone has your best intentions at heart, so be safe and go with a pack!
2. Always have a charged phone, and have an "on call"
CHARGE YOUR PHONE. You never know what kind of situation you may find yourself in, so avoid any risks and have that smartphone at 100 percent. Going off of that, make sure you have at least one person on call in case of an emergency, because you truly never know.
3. Don’t travel to a different location without telling someone
Sometimes multiple parties are happening in one night, and although it is fun to try and go to them all, make sure you keep everyone in the loop. It is not safe to leave a house where all your friends still think you are and not tell anyone. Avoid the unnecessary panic, and either stay at that house the whole time or travel as a group to your next destination.
4. Be cautious of all foreign liquid
To reiterate the earlier statement about people with bad intentions, make sure you know exactly what you are putting in your body. Whether it be finding out what that “punch” is really mixed with, or someone offering you a sip of their drink, don’t be a fool. Be smart, and don’t take risks with your body.
5. It’s okay to go home early
Sometimes people worry that they look like a loser for wanting to be in bed early, but I’m here to tell you that it’s okay. No one wants to hang out in a house full of 100 random people every weekend, all weekend, so don’t feel embarrassed if it’s not your scene.
6. Don’t pressure yourself to try something if you aren’t comfortable
If an alarm is going off in your head saying something isn’t right, chances are it isn’t right for you. Never let anyone, including yourself, force you into doing something that could negatively impact your mental or physical health. A simple 'no' should always do the trick, and never feel ashamed for the good morals you’ve developed.
7. Have a good time!
College parties, though intimidating, can be a really great time. Just remember to be safe, and you’re good to go!
