We get it: midterm season is hard. But how can you juggle studying, keeping up with your coursework, your social life and not die from stress? Here are five tips to help organize your life to be successful during this stressful week (or few if you're so lucky).

1. Use the calendar on your phone

When I was a freshman, I never used my phone to plan out my week. I would forget deadlines and not allocate my time wisely just because I did not know what I had to do during the week. Your phone will update you when you have to start the next task and I recommend setting time limits to each task. It will make sure you don't spend too much time on one assignment and you will finish more within a set amount of time.

2. Set reminders for all the small things

I know that during midterm season everything begins to pile up and you forget about buying groceries or when to do laundry. You know, the fun things. Setting reminders for yourself on your phone will free your brain of all the clutter and help you focus on the bigger issues, like how many notecards you need to make for your chemistry exam. Your phone will notify you about your smaller tasks and you can decide how important it is to complete on that day.

3. Prioritize your tasks based on deadlines

I used to do the easiest things first instead of doing what was most important first (okay I'm guilty of doing this on occasion still). If there is a research paper due on Thursday and an exam on Friday, start the paper on Sunday and finish it by Tuesday. Create notecards (or however else you study) on Monday, but focus more heavily on the paper.

4. Have a small self-care routine

While this may seem strange or random, it's not. Whether you go for a 20-minute walk outside, take a long shower or read something for pleasure before bed, it's important to have a moment not related to school. Take care of your mental state as well as your grades. With a fresh mind, you will accomplish more tasks and stay focused.

5. Leave one night for fun

Fun? Are you kidding me? I have 20 papers and 80 exams this week. Stress is temporary, GPA is forever. Yes, I have heard all of these phrases before. It's important to have a break from it all. Reset your brain with a night out or have some friends over to watch Netflix. Everyone needs time to socialize and stay sane. Just be sure this night is not used as a way to procrastinate, but as a treat for everything you accomplished this week.

Midterms are always stressful and balancing it can be difficult. These tips will help you navigate this stressful time and stay relatively happy.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
