The pants are getting tighter. The booty’s getting bigger (which I don’t really mind). And I can’t tell if my cheeks are getting puffier or if it’s just the mirror. Though the yearn to stay in and sleep grows more, it’s the time to get up, get in, and get active!
The most important part of fitness isn’t whether it’s summer or winter, it’s consistency. Encouraging yourself to get up, rain or shine, and get after it is how you’re going to stay in shape this winter.
Switch Up Your Routine
Check out your local dance studio or campus rec center for workout classes and indoor activities! Zen out and try some Hot Yoga. Get those hips moving at a Belly Dance class. Get a group of friends together and play indoor soccer.
Ice-Skate, Snowboard, or Ski
Winter weather brings an array of activities! Get the family together during the holidays and go on a trip to the mountains for skiing and snowboarding. Grab some friends, grab a sled, and sled down the snowy hills. Enjoy a romantic date with your sweetheart at your local ice-skating rink.
Indoor Rock Climbing Gym
Test out your fear of heights and rock climb. It’s a great place to challenge your strengths, work out muscles you didn’t even know existed, and meet new people. We’re fortunate here to have a couple rock climbing gyms at Humboldt State!
Swim
Since the weather is no bueno outside, you can still feel like you’re a part of nature by swimming inside! Many college campus or local community centers have open sessions for the swimming pool.
Home Workouts
Become besties with Billy Blanks and work a sweat in the comfort of your own home. Youtube is always a good go to and if you have weights, resistance bands, a stability ball, or other equipment, you can incorporate those into a great full body workout!
Nutrition
Holiday parties are filling up your calendar, Grammy’s in the fudge making Olympics, and every Carol in every office is bringing cookies every Friday. Damn it, Carol. Maintaining a healthy diet can become harder than finishing finals during this time of year but nutrition is a key element in staying in shape. Keep those veggies close and enjoy a sweet treat here and there. It’s all about balance baby!
