It's summertime and that means more free time than we thought possible during the school year. It's nice to be able to do nothing every once in a while, but sometimes there's a little too much free time for some of us. I like having things to do and projects to work on, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Here are four things to do this summer. Some are goal oriented, or just things you can do whenever you feel like it. Plus side: you don't need to spend money.
1. Make a list of books you want to read.
I'm constantly reading at school (#englishmajorlife), but I never got a whole lot of time for leisure reading. When summer came around, I made a list of books I want to read for each week. So far, it's been pretty successful. If you like reading, or maybe made a goal of reading more this summer, jot down the books you've been meaning to read for awhile.
I have a bookshelf full of books I've gotten with every intention of reading them, but never did. This is the summer for me to finally finish them all. I've read a book a week and I've gotten five finished already. I can finally join the hype train about "Gone Girl," even if it's extremely late in the game -- at least now I've finally done it.
2. Keep active.
This seems like the lamest advice, I know, and typically I wouldn't give it, but this is an opportunity to do something different from the exercise you get at school. I like to do yoga in the morning, which I don't get to do at school because I don't want to get up over an hour before class to do it. I feel a little more energetic throughout the day, or at least a little less tense. I also go on walks around the neighborhood with my friend because once I leave for school, it's going to be another three months before I get to see home again; I have to soak it all in while I can. Little things like these are different and fun from what you might typically do. Plus, it's a good way to pass the time.
3. Make some real food.
Make cookies or pancakes or a big lunch of things you love. If you have an on-campus meal plan you don't always get nice food, so make it yourself. You get to know everything you're putting into your meal and the way it's prepared. It's great! Plus, you can brag to everyone about the food you've made... Or give them the opportunity to tease you for burning pancakes.
4. Treat yo' self 2016.
Take a bath. Get a face mask. Watch a movie that you've been hearing about for months. Do whatever's going to make you happy. If you've got the free time, you may as well use it. You can get so caught up in enjoying doing nothing that you start slacking on everything. Spending time to do something you enjoy or something that will help you relax can really brighten up your day, and it is a great way to spend your time.
It's summer and you should do whatever you want. Do the things that make you happy. Do the things that you don't have time to do when you're away from home. These are just some of the things that I enjoy doing and will spend my summer doing.
