If you know anything about me, you probably know these two things: First, I am extremelyorganized; and two, I am in love with the TV show "Friends." Lucky for me, these two things tend to overlap. You would not believe the amount of times I have been called Monica like it's an insult — for me, it's honestly the best thing anyone could ever call me. In case you have troubles keeping all your ducks in a row, especially before going off to school this fall, let me share with you how I stay nice and organized, explained by the '90s Queen of Clean, Monica Geller.
1. Have a schedule
Just like Monica the wedding planner, keep everything on a time table to help make your life easier. I'm not saying plan your life to a T, but it's good to have a rough outline of your day. Planning and timing help to keep your school work organized; when you have class, when you have work and even when you have free time to hang out with friends. And if you can handle it, military time is good to know (my boyfriend is in ROTC so I'm learning).
2. Plan things out
If you don't have a planner, I suggest you get one. Mine has saved my life on many occasions. It helps me keep track of when I have work do, when finals are, and even when the breaks are. Color-coding classes and events helps even more, and it makes your planner pretty to look at. Whether you spend $50 or $10, any planner will help you stay organized.
3. Label everything
From notebooks to folders, labels are a god given gift. Now you don't have to physically label everything you own (unless you want to, then do whatever floats your boat), but knowing where everything is can truly keep your mind at ease when looking for your stapler, or your favorite shirt, especially in a cluttered dorm room.
4. Keep your room clean
Your room is a direct reflection of how you handle yourself, and if it's a mess, odds are your life is a mess, too. How can you keep yourself organized if your living space looks like a tornado ran through it? I try to set aside a day to spend specifically on cleaning/doing laundry, and afterwards I just feel so accomplished and relaxed, and then I'm ready to organize more things. I may have a problem, but at least it keeps me calm.
Years before I actually applied to any schools, I told my friends and family I wanted to major in organizing. I don't know how or when I feel in love, but here I am today. This may make me seem a bit crazy, but when you find a system that works for you, you will see how it makes your life so much easier. I hope Monica can inspire you like she does me, now all you have to do is watch all 10 seasons and get inspired.
