The holidays are great. Free food, family time, and no more running out of time to fill the fridge because (hopefully) the family fridge is always full! This sounds like every students dream, but it can create some issues for students trying to be fit and active, especially if dinner at home is usually meat, potatoes, and ice cream for dessert. Here are some tips on how to keep that holiday weight at bay
1. Steer clear of the pop
Pop is delicious, let's not lie here, but it's loaded with calories and high in sugar, which is a no-no for weight loss. Opt for water, or diet soda, which is much lower in sugar and often has zero calories.
2. Keep the alcohol intake low
I know this one sounds impossible while being at home with the family for three weeks, but alcohol is similar to pop, high in sugars and calories. Heavy drinking throws off the gym routine as well, who wants to work out hungover? No one. A few drinks here or there, and opt for low calorie mix-ins.
3. No gym? No problem!
Some students go home to a small town with zero gym options, and some don't want to pay for a gym membership for three weeks. This can make staying in shape really tough. Get on Pinterest and look for work out alternatives that don't require a gym. Take the stairs, walk the dog, go for a run outside (but bundle up!).
4. Portions are important
With the indulgent Thanksgiving dinner behind us, there are many more to come. Thanksgiving leftovers, Christmas dinner, and the candy from your stocking can be an issue for some. Portion control is important for keeping that bod in shape. Opt for one piece of candy instead of four, or the low calorie dressing instead of full fat ranch. As difficult as it can be, it will be worth it when you keep that holiday weight at bay!
5. Set a healthy New Year's Resolution
Working out and getting in shape is the No. 1 New Year's Resolution, and also the one that gets broken the fastest. But determination can go a long way. Set up a workout routine that fits your (insanely busy) schedule, plan out some healthy meals you can make in advanced, and buy some cute workout clothes for motivation! Getting in shape and staying in shape is a hard thing to do, but there's no day like today!
