Tuesday March 27, 2018 was a big day for the natives of, my hometown, Clark’s Summit Pennsylvania. Abington Heights High School’s boys’ basketball team traveled all the way to Hershey to play Mars High School in the state championship. This was not the first time our basketball team made it to the championship but it was the first time we came out with the victory.
With an epic 29 points from George Tinsley, the Comets came out on top with a score of 67-55. The boys made history that night because it was Abington Heights’ first ever state championship title. Abington Heights just so happens to be my alma mater so this week out of all of them, I am most proud to call myself a comet.
Clark’s Summit has been all over the map of sports this year. Not only did Abington Heights win the boys basketball state championship but Abington Heights alumni, Adam Rippon, represented the United States and won at this year’s winter Olympics. Not only did he place at the Olympics but he became the first ever openly gay man to represent the United States at the Olympics. This just so happened to be the year of the comets.
This was also a big night for junior George Tinsley, who scored his 1000th career-point during this final game, making his own moment of history to add to the celebration. Many people do not reach their 1000th point until their final year in high school so it’s definitely a personal and community achievement that he could do this well as just a junior. He sure is someone to look out for in the next basketball season for the Comets. The Comets actually trailed by one at halftime but came out strong in the second hand to take the lead and defeat the Fightin’ Planets.
It’s amazing to see so many people from my home town thriving and succeeding. It shows just how much hard work really does pay off. Seeing all the success that has recently come from Clark’s Summit makes me appreciate where I come from even more.
