What college is like coming a semester after everyone else.

6 Realizations I Had Entering College During The Second Semester

I decided I didn’t want to go to college a long time ago. As you can tell by me writing this in my dorm room, I changed my mind. This shocked everyone around me including myself but I love my choice. It was weird starting college as everyone is on their second semester, This is what I have learned so far.

1. They tell you nothing

Most of what I learned about the campus and how things worked was from the people around me. Thank god I have amazing suitemates who help me out! I didn’t even know we got bus passes from the school to get around the city!

2. Good luck making friends

People who come first semester get all these really cool bonding trips and events. The most we got was our IDs then told when classes start. This is both good and bad. For the shy people, you most likely will stick to being by yourself so this experience kind of forces you to go out of your comfort zone to make friends. Shout out to my suitemates for being amazing people!

3. You don’t get the warm experience.

Wisconsin is cold, man. There’s so much to do around here when it’s warm out so coming in the winter makes finding things to do a little bit harder. I’m a very outdoors type person and would love to go walking by the beach everyday or going on adventures exploring the city but that is very hard to do when you are shivering most of the time.

4. You don’t question the strange noises

My first few nights here the floor was vibrating. I just figured that was normal till I talked to my suitemate about it at lunch. Turns out the water pipe broke a few floors below us. We figured this out when we went to confront the people below us thinking they were the cause. The one guy looked scared and confused and said he was watching Aladdin with his girlfriend, the other jumped out of his room asking if we were talking about the mini-earthquakes.

5. Buying stuff for your dorm sucks

By the time you figure out what you need for your dorm, it’s already April so you need to decide if it is worth buying now or if you should just wait till next year. In my case, it was an electric kettle and I am so happy I got it before next year because I have consumed so much tea.

6. People are so helpful!

You don’t know where your classroom is? “Oh hunny it’s down that hall third door!” Need to know what stop to get off at? The people will be more than happy to let you know and remind you that your stop is coming up. I swear I would be so lost without everyone's help!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
