New Year, New Me?

There is a new year upon us, so why are we always worried about it?

New year, new me. This is the mantra that millions will have and did have with the start of a new year.

It doesn’t if you rang in the new year with America or you celebrate it in February by following the lunar calendar, a thing we all have in common is the believe that with a new cycle, there is a chance at a fresh start. It is true that, we create this change on our own. No matter the beginning, time doesn't really make a difference if there is a fresh start or not.

What matters is the will to start a new project or continue on a journey a long time ago and you are using this opportunity to check in with yourself, the fact of the matter is now you have to work with keeping your goals.

Which leads to the question of, why do we break our New Year Resolutions? Is it truly laziness or forgetfulness? I know that I am guilty of that of both, but is there more to it than just the desire to not do a thing? What if it is the fear of change? Or perhaps the fear of failure? Are we wrapped up in the mentality of the desire to succeed in all that we do that we forget it is the process towards the journey that matters more than the end result? Are we so worried of becoming something so different that we try to sabotage ourselves at every possible moment to keep ourselves stagnant and never amount to our true possible potential?

In preparation for this new year, I have been watching my social media feed for the reactions and goals. A lot of which they compared 2017 to be simply a chapter in our lives that represents our lowest point and 2018 is gradual rise from the ashes. I like to think of it in that way to.

We love underdog stories and what better underdog story than our own? 2016 was the year of warning and 2017 is the year of the villain gaining strength and beating us down. 2018 will be the year we discover our own strength and overcome the adversaries of the previous year.

This year, we will learn to fight back, learn to love ourselves, learn a skill, learn to eat health, learn to appreciate the small things or anything else you want to try. The thing we must remember is that there will always be failure, the real quest is learning to continue walking forward even after stumbling. We keep moving forward instead of abandoning the project just because we messed up a deadline or forget to work out for a week.

So here is my wish to you all dear readers of 2018. I wish for you to be happy and find success in not only this new year but every year afterward. I hope this year is filled with love and happiness. Continue to work hard, soon it will be all worth it.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
