How To Start Your Day On A Positive Note
Marissa Coulter

We all have mornings where we dread the day before our eyes even open, I know I do. Let me assist you on how to start your day on a positive note!

Get a good night of sleep. Sounds obvious enough, right?

Wrong. Watching Netflix with one eye open doesn’t count, trust me. Set your alarm—yuck, I know—and put your phone away. I’m talking toss that sucker way across the room, or I guess just place it far enough that it’s out of reach. We all get the urge to scroll Facebook when we think we can’t sleep, aka we’ve closed our eyes for five seconds and nothing happened, and then suddenly our eyes are absorbed into the bright light filled with selfies and status updates. Next thing you know, your alarm is going off.

COFFEE

I don’t know about you, but coffee has the power to make me into a better person with just one sip of that sweet, sweet cup of love. “I don’t want to go to work” turns into, “WHO’S READY TO WORK IN THIS BIOTCH?!” Okay, maybe not every day—did you think I was going to say maybe not to that extreme? Don’t doubt the caffeine, grasshopper—but it sure as hell makes me more pleasant than how I was feeling when my eyes first opened. Just call me Queen Coffeelizabeth.

Eat a real breakfast

Haven’t you ever heard that it’s the most important meal of the day? I mean, I don’t discriminate, I think every meal is special. Okay seriously though, stop joking around. Sit down and enjoy some eggs. You deserve it...and there’s the fact that it will help your metabolism get going and keep your body away from starvation mode, but more importantly you deserve it. Two thumbs-up for protein!

Get dressed like you’re about to brag about yourself on Instagram, Kim K style

I love myself some leggings and a nice sweatshirt, but comfy isn’t always a good thing. Many times it makes me want to crawl right back into that good looking square of blankets and pillows that I just managed to roll myself out of. Spice it up a little! I’m not telling you to change the leggings, that’s just absurd, but dress those babies up. That’s the great thing about them. You look good, you feel good, right? Maybe? Work with me, people.

Take one good look in the mirror

Do it. Look at your reflection and say “damn, you’re looking good,” because you do! Honestly though, self motivate and self love, people! Tell yourself what you’re going to get done today because you can. You are in control. Love that reflection looking back at you, because your love for yourself is more important than any other love, and that confidence is what will carry you through the day.

Drink more coffee

I’m kidding…well, kind of… I know, I know heart rate, blah blah, caffeine crash, blah blah. There’s worse things in the world. Just watch the presidential debates.

Brush your teeth...please.

This sounds like a given, but some people need that reminder! I know it's rough waking up early and trying to remember everything before you rush out the door, but your coworker doesn’t want their eye balls burning from your fresh coffee breath, ya feel me?

Walk out of the door with a killer smile

All joking aside, you’re breathing and you’re capable of doing whatever it is you’re going to do, and that right there is a handful to be thankful for. I can’t tell you exactly how to start your day, everyone has their own routine that works for them, but start it off with a grateful heart and the rest of the day will fall into place. Remember, a smile is worth a thousand words. Or is that the saying about a picture? I didn't have my coffee yet today, okay? Just smile. If you brushed your teeth like I said to, you have nothing to lose. Except your car keys, I lose those sometimes too.

And....GO!

And there you have it, a positive note. Now go get started!

I know what you're all thinking...

And you're welcome.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
