Have you ever gotten tired or bored of a regular workout routine? Well, have you ever considered powerlifting? Powerlifting is a form of weight lifting sport that focuses on three main lifts: squat, bench press and deadlift. It builds muscle, burns fat, strengthens bones and much more. Though it is compared to Olympic weight lifting, many people prefer to skip the competitions and simply do it for the many benefits it offers.
1. You don't get out of breath so easily!
When I first started my freshman year of college, getting around campus was a hassle. I'd have to spend more time and energy than I would've liked. Now that I've been doing powerlifting for many months, I've noticed that I no longer get short of breath. In fact, I get to other parts of campus much faster now without feeling like I expended my energy.
2. Strength!
This is beneficial for everyone(I'm looking at you ladies). Do not be afraid of the weight. It can smell fear. On another note, I can actually do normal pushups now. This may not seem like a big deal, but I was never able to do even one. I'm a small, petite young lady (4'10 and weighed about 94 lbs) who'd struggle at times to open a water bottle. My next goal is to get strong enough to do a pull up.
3. Your weight will increase.
And you should welcome it with open arms! No, that doesn't mean you've been overeating. It means that you've gained more muscle.4. You'll notice your body will have a better figure.
Your arms will be leaner, glutes will have more of a "pop," and your back will have more muscles. In other words, reach for that backless dress and show them that "baby's got back!"
5. Energy!
This may sound funny considering that as a college student, it's hard to have time or energy to do much other than college, but I promise you'll have more of it. Of course, getting proper rest is vital after a workout for this to work, but your body feels healthier and stronger therefore more energized.
6. More food!
You heard me right. When you're trying to build muscle, you need to bulk. That means more food and calories into your system. For the sake of the bulk, of course!
7. You have to be confident when powerlifting.
Remember what I said before? The weight can smell your fear. After you learn to force your confidence when working out, you'll notice you may be more confident outside the gym overall.
8. You get to train your stability.
Believe me, this can be extremely helpful depending on the situation...
9. Quality sleep!
When you're both mentally and physically exhausted, you're going to get very deep sleep.
10. When you're feeling confident, well rested, strong and energized, you're less likely to feel depressed.
So go out there, start powerlifting and kick some butt!
