I've never seen Star Wars. During the entirety of my teenage and young adult years, not a soul will believe me when I say that, followed by a proclamation that Star Wars is something I have to watch. This was even more emphasized when Galaxy's Edge was opened in Disney's Hollywood Studios; I loved the land but didn't know much of the context.
I had friends explain to me that going to Galaxy's Edge as a Star Wars fan was the same as me going to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios being a (very big) Harry Potter fan. That felt especially the case this past May the 4th as everybody posted about Star Wars and I decided it was finally time to tackle Star Wars, starting with the episodes 4-6 in the original trilogy.
Leia Is An Actual Icon
GiphyThe original Star Wars trilogy first came to theaters in the 1970s with A New Hope. Everybody knows Princess Leia and her cool space buns; I've even put my hair in buns myself on Star Wars-themed days at work and school in the past. What I've never realized is that Princess Leia is an independent woman who knows how to fight.
When Han and Luke rescued her in A New Hope, she isn't a damsel in distress. She questions flaws in their plan shoots at stormtroopers and stands her ground. She can equally graceful as she is assertive as she leads the rebellion and trusted her gut when Luke and her would communicate telepathically.
I Forget These Movies Were Filmed So Long Ago
GiphyThe Star Wars movies were filmed in the late 1970s/early 1980s. If you ignore the older camera quality, I often times can't believe that these movies are almost as old as my mother. There is so much cool technology and the concept of a futuristic world is built out so beautifully in the films. Of course, the explosions are hilarious - like the destruction of the Death Star - but for the time period, it actually isn't that bad.
One Of History's Most Famous Lines Is Wrong
GiphyIf you ask someone for one of the most famous lines ever said in a movie, there's a high chance that they'll say the famous quote from The Empire Strikes Back. Darth Vader tells Luke of his true parentage - but he does not say, "Luke, I am your father" like everybody believes. He actually says, "No, I am your father" which then cues Luke's dramatic reaction which got a laugh out of me. Many people say that the difference in the quotes is due to the Mandela Effect, but it just might be poor misquoting.
R2-D2 and C-3PO Are The Best Characters
GiphyC-3PO, in charge of human-cyborg relations, is formal but painfully awkward at times. He right off the bat has a hilarious dynamic with R2-D2 as they bicker like a married couple. In The Empire Strikes Back, C-3PO loses function of his legs as he is on Chewie's back and hilariously complains about how he can't see anything that is happening. R2-D2 without even speaking, on the other hand, was the funniest character. There was so much sass and spunk in R2-D2's mannerisms and how R2 would know information that would have been convenient to tell the group had he been able to speak. Without these two together, I wouldn't have died as much as I did watching.
Han Solo Is Indiana Jones in Space
GiphyIf we're talking about my favorite human character (sorry R2 and C-3PO), Han Solo steals the show. Introduced right away as a total BA, Han adds spice to the team with his attitude. He says he doesn't want to be there but clearly gets a kick out of the adventure and Chewie is another staple to the team. His bickering with Leia is lighthearted but you can tell right away that they have the hots for each other. Despite that, when he thought Leia was in love with Luke romantically, he backs off because he just wants her to be happy. Han is not only cool but also a very sweet guy and I look forward to watching Solo when the time comes.
I could easily see how people get wrapped up in the lure of the story and how it ends up being their favorite series. Nothing will ever dethrone Harry Potter as my favorite, but Star Wars has already established itself up there as one of my favorite movies of all time. I've kept myself to watching a movie per day, which is hard but letting myself really get involved in the universe. Next on the list is the prequel trilogy and I am excited.
