Five Staples of Obtaining a Happier Soul

A busy life can sometimes take control and put a damper on our lives. We start to forget how to be happy and lose ourselves in all the stress we’ve been encountering. Nobody every said life was easy, but learning these simple things and executing them will sure to help create more smiles in your life.

Taking time to enjoy the little things

Life moves so fast, sometimes it feels faster than a blink of an eye. Take the time to enjoy what’s going on around you. Sometimes focusing on these things will help make the bigger picture seem worth while. We often ignore these little things because we as humans have learned to become fixated on “more important things.” Enjoy your cup of coffee, enjoy that cute text you got, enjoy that in that moment something made you smile, even if it was for a spilt second.

Spend your money on memories not objects

Objects can only make us happy for a short while. While you enjoy those new shoes you bought, the concert you wore those shoes too will seriously over exceed in the “good good” feeling. Objects come and go, we change our taste constantly, but those memories. Those memories can never be altered or change, they will forever stay with us. It doesn’t have to be anything extraordinary, even just taking $25 to buy snacks for a movie night with all your besties.

Full understanding of one self

Don’t ever put anyone else above you. You are 100% in control of your own self, make sure you completely know what you want and what’s best for you. It’s a waste of time to spend all those hours on other people and not even know what to do with the 30 minutes you have to yourself. Only you know what goes on in your head, learn how to control your emotions. That advice you’re giving your best friend, learn how to take it yourself.

Don’t compare yourself to others

Nobody should ever feel like someone is above them or below them. This is a dangerous game to play. You’ll always find something better or worse in other people, this is not healthy. Not only are you being negative but you’re forcing yourself to find happiness in other people’s life. Use the energy you’re wasting on nit picking other peoples life to find it in yourself, I promise you, you’ll find something. Something just as simple as waking up in the morning should be an accomplishment. Congrats to you, you’re doing great.

Radiate your positivity

Once you’ve learned how to become a happier person radiate your positivity. You’ll start to feel a difference, the atmosphere around you will start to liven up. Everything will feel more at ease and you’ll find yourself smiling more. Having a bad day? Compliment a stranger, not only will you make their day that much better but the smile they had? You did that, and that.. that’s something to smile about yourself.

Once you’ve mastered all five of these things you should be able to start a happier lifestyle. Don’t think of life as complicated as you would, think of it as a simple to do list. Don’t worry, take it a day at a time, you’re not in competition with anyone. You will get there, it could take your hours or years, but who put an expiration on happiness? That’s right, nobody. And remember, you’re not alone.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
