To those of you that are not aware of the tragic events in Oaxaca, Mexico, let me give you an overview of what Oaxaca looks like right now. Recently, teachers in Oaxaca attempted to protest education reforms and it led to the death of nine people and approximately 100 people were injured. Teachers have been fired and a couple of the leaders of the protest have been arrested. Why were teachers protesting these reforms? The reform requires teachers to take a test as well as an evaluation review and if a teacher fails three times, it is likely they lose their job. So why are teachers so angered by these reforms? It is not fair for the teachers to be evaluated at the same standards. How can a teacher from a rural area be compared to a teacher from the city?
Much like in the United States, it is likely to see that the districts with more money have more qualified teachers compared to those districts with less money. Therefore, it is not adequate to hold teachers from different places to the same standards. Also, students cannot all be taught the same. Another disgusting factor is that the police, who are supposed to keep the community safe are the ones who the teachers in Oaxaca are fighting against. These police officers were shooting at unarmed civilians who wanted their voices to be heard.
I do not blame you for not being informed. The events occurring in Oaxaca are not being highlighted in the news like it should be. Remember when Paris was attacked? Or the Orlando massacre? Every news channel highlighted these events. What about Oaxaca? These teachers wanted to stand up for what they believe in and it unfortunately led to a violent confrontation with the police. Take a moment to research these events and become informed. Just like the events that took place in Orlando or in Paris, Oaxaca needs as much attention. Oaxaca needs to expose the cruelty in their authorities.
Pray for Oaxaca and stand with Oaxaca. This protest should not have led to the death and injuries of civilians.
