Some know her as Ke$ha, but her real name is Kesha Rose Sebert. While you may not know anything about her or care for her music, what's going on in her life right now is important.
This isn't fair to her and she's not the only one suffering with these problems.
According to Kesha, for over a decade she has been physically, sexually and verbally abused by her world-famous producer, Dr. Luke. She has been claiming to the court that he drugged and raped her when she was 18 and has spent the last decade making her feel worthless so that he could better control her.
On Feb. 19, 2016, Kesha went before the court trying to get out of her contract with Sony Music but her injunction was denied. This is forcing her to make an extremely difficult choice: Go back to work with the man who abused her or further put her career on hold.
Going back to work for Dr. Luke would be insane and, quite honestly, probably not in the cards for Kesha seeing as how she has already taken a leave from her career to avoid him.
However, the New York Supreme Court justice thinks it is manageable. The court chose the contract and the music label over the health, safety, and well-being of a 28-year-old girl and this is not OK.
The Judge stated that there is not enough medical evidence.
How can the judge decide if Kesha was abused?
We can't put the power in the hands of the court to decide if someone is abused or not. If she said she was abused, that has to mean something. There is an average of 293,066 people raped every year. If the court won't stand with a pop star, how are scared victims all across the country suppose to be able to come out about the abuse they have faced?
Kesha deserves her happiness.
Sony Music chose to stand against her. Rather than let her out of her contract, Sony has let her go through all of this turmoil and emotional stress.
The last album Kesha released was in 2012. She has a passion for music and has worked hard to do what makes her happy. By telling her that she has to record with Sony Music or not at all, they are taking away her freedom to follow her dream and find happiness. The world is constantly telling us to do what you love, so why can't Kesha have that?
Kesha is not an object or a singing machine. She is a person.
Taking a stand for Kesha is also a stand for women rights and musicians' rights. A stand against bullies. A stand against abuse.
She shouldn't have to go through what's happening to her. Fight to free Kesha from an abusive situation, to help her get back to a career that she loves, and to stand against bullies like Sony Music and Dr. Luke.
Stand with Kesha.
