Standing Up For What You Believe In

As college students we are constantly rushing around. Meeting deadlines, going to events, hanging out with friends and being independent. On top of all of this it is the first time you truly form your opinions and express them. Professors ask you to write papers and speak your mind while in class, but some students on campus will have different views on certain subjects, and it is easy to fall into a hole of beliefs that aren't unique to you. That's why it is important to stand up for what you believe in. Whether you have beliefs about religion, politics, the universe, or even about a day to day routine- stay true to yourself.

A professor might teach a whole semester on something that is the opposite of what you believe, but don't let that one teacher change your mind. Just like everyone else, teachers have their personal opinions and it is crucial to listen and respect these, but then for you to have your own unique ideas and thoughts that can piggyback off of these teachings. It is hard to sit in a class and disagree with a teacher, or write papers or answer questions that go against what you grew up knowing. I know many times I have listened to teachers or peer's opinions and adopted these as my own. The problem I had was they contradicted what I firmly believe in. Listening to words that can be very persuasive makes us think that they might be right.

It's okay to be bold. On a college campus certain ideals might be the norm. If you don't share these ideas its hard to stand up and state a different opinion, or even stick to it if it's different than what everyone else thinks. But I say it is attractive to have strong views. Being firm and strong in your ways shows confidence and truth to oneself. College is all about diversity. Having different backgrounds and beliefs is challenging us to broaden our knowledge, not force us to change. College is the time for experimenting and meeting people who might be total opposites of us, but that's still no excuse. A relationship with someone who does not accept you for who you are and what you believe in is not worth your time. `

Be true to yourself. You were made a certain way for a reason. Be smart and stay true to who you are, no matter what the situation.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
