Standing Up When The World Says Stay Down

When our doubt begins to consume us, how do we fight back?

“Don’t, can’t, won’t.”

“It’s not worth it, It’s a waste of time, they don’t care...You’re not enough.”

We’ve all been there, life is at its peak, you think “man my life is going great” and then you blink and you’re being consumed by the words above. Whether it’s a job, school, friendship, marriage, relationship, something always tends to go amiss when you least expect it.

There is pain behind every person, there is a story behind every face and we tend to forget that we are not alone in our troubles. The voice gets so loud we don’t realize that it is talking to thousands of other people. Think about that, thousands and thousands of people are in the same exact spot as you are. We all have a story, and we all have our pain; whether someone left, lied, or died it created a mark, it left a scar.

Our scars, sometimes we wear them proudly and sometimes we hide them. The oldest ones tend to be the ones that help create the rest. Abandonment, abuse, heartache, these stories are everywhere, they litter our lives yet they are the hardest to tell for some.

Our everyday choices, they affect these scars whether it’s your own choice or the choice of another. These scars are either healed, ripped open, or given a friend. They are present and they are our own.

Now it’s just another day, but something happened. Something that ripped open one of your scars and the pain is so real it leaves you breathless. They start again, the words “Can’t, won’t, it’s not worth it, you are not enough” repeat like a broken record in your head. It consumes you.

You’re picturing it, you’ve been there.

Now tell that voice to go straight back to hell.

Remember you are not alone, and those words that are on repeat, they’re lies. Take control of your pain, take control of your choices. When the broken record of your thoughts is playing, turn on your dancing music and make it loud. Watch your favorite movie, pick up your favorite book, sing your favorite song at the top of your lungs. Get off of the couch or out of your bed and just go, go anywhere. Find a beautiful place and make it yours, make it your reminder that the world is so much bigger than your pain. Surround yourself with love. That one friend who makes you laugh no matter what, call them. Ask for help, someone will come.

Make a choice, I know it’s hard. Make a choice to smile, laugh, and feel. In the middle of everything remember we would not know happiness or joy without pain and loss.

Kick, punch, scratch, scream, cry, fall to your knees and pray.

Find your strength, and then stand back up.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
