Stand Up For Yourself
By Melissa Greer

Recently I came into contact with a lady that shared an incredibly story to share. She said that two years ago she was attacked in an ally by two guys. They beat her up badly and stole all of her belongings. She was left in the ally for dead. I thought it was completely appalling to hear about her experience. Someone found her and called for help. Afterward, she was terrified to go out alone and avoided many areas where she felt threatened. This lead to her staying inside most of the days. After several months of loneliness at home, she signed up for a women's defense fighting class in her neighborhood. The classes helped her gain the strength that she needed to leave the house and travel wherever she wanted without having to be too scared.

I understand the change of attitude in people after they begin to learn defensive fighting. This gives them confidence to be able to protect themselves or those they love. It's a great feeling to have the courage to walk down the street and not be scared for your safety. A class called The Female Awareness is available to women in search of empowering themselves through mentality and fitness.

Confidence doesn't always ensure stability and protection all of the time though. A person could work all night for a work presentation the next morning. They would be able to provide concrete details of their proposal and answer any questions that may arise. This gives the person boost of energy and they are able to finish the presentation. This doesn't mean that they will actually have their proposal accepted. It acts as a temporary confidence almost. For this matter, I feel as though people can't be too confident.

Author Jeff Cooper stated, "The criminal does not expect his prey to fight back. May he never choose you, but, if he does, surprise him." I think that this is a great way to understand these situations. You shouldn't be a sitting duck for an assailant to attack you. Make sure that there are multiple ways of disarming, stunning, or escaping. People should be prepared to handle themselves if in a potentially violent situation. While many of people hope that nothing drastically bad will ever happen to them personally, you never know.

We must be able to stand up for ourselves. Our lives are valuable and we must be able to be the keeper of our body. During a time when women’s rights are constantly called into the light. It’s important to bring empowerment through several means. I salute many of the strong women in the world who are fighting for themselves. I encourage people to know a few techniques that can be used to protect yourself.

female tv characters
We Heart It

Over the past decade, television has undergone a very crucial transition: the incorporation of female lead characters. Since it's a known fact that girls actually do run the world (Beyonce said so herself), it's time for the leading ladies of the small screen to get some credit. Without these characters, women would still be sitting in the background of our favorite shows. These women are not only trailblazers for female empowerment, but role models for women worldwide. With that, here are 15 of the smartest, sassiest ladies gracing our screens that remind us that women do, indeed, rule:

If you are like me, you have an interesting personality. Basically, you love to be sassy and snarky, gossip, and act like a total bitch (not really), but deep down, you are actually a very genuinely nice person. The idea of actually hurting someone truly makes you feel bad, and you probably have never actually hurt someone’s feelings because your kindness always shines through, even if you do not want it to. Not sure exactly what I would call this type of personality, but if you identify with it, here are some feelings you can undoubtedly relate to.
