Ban Bad Owners

It's NOT the breed, IT'S THE OWNERS!

Ban Bad Owners

So, many of you may have heard about the ban of pitbulls in Montreal Canada. Well I have to say, everytime I see a ban on that breed it makes me angry. How many times do people have to tell others that it's NOT the breed, IT'S THE OWNERS! I cannot stress that enough. I came from a school where I learned proper training skills. I can assure you humans have the power in their hands to train for good, or to train for bad. Sadly there have been cases where there have been many dog fights involving pits.

On October of 2015 Ontario Canada had a dog fighting case. 31 dogs were seized all being in the pitbull family. Now I suppose the dogs just decided "Okay, we're going to fight today." No, that's not how that works. The enforcement who found these dogs, also found many tools used to train the dogs to fight. That's right, train.

The Humane Society of the United States said "Breeders take advantage of pitbulls loyalty to make them more aggressive." Breeding is a key factor in how these dogs are handled. If people are purposely breeding for the aggresive gene then they are using their power to manipulate these dogs. They are ultimately destroying the reputation of this breed. Not all these dogs are bad.

In 2013, a pit named Ellie earned an award for being a therapy dog in Roanoke Rapids, NC. She helped children learn dog safety and to help people overcome fear of dogs. You can read all about her story.

We don't just hear about attacks from pitbulls either. What about the Golden Retriever named Jackson who attacked his owner 2 years ago? No one looks at a Golden Retriever as a vicious dog, they're seen as a "family dog." It's funny how you don't really hear much about the other breeds that attack as much as you hear about the pitbulls. Media blows things up and puts fear into other people. I can assure you that any dog can become aggressive if not properly trained.

I think it's time we stop to realize it's not the dog, it's the owners training or lack of training. We can't target all the pitbulls because of another pitbull's actions. That's like if a kid had an allergic reaction to soda then we're going to ban soda everywhere. That's normally not what happens. In that case you just don't let the kid have soda, just like you shouldn't let a bad owner who will not properly train a dog have one, pitbull or not. No matter what happens I will always stand with pitbulls, nothing will ever change that. If you read this article and you still believe pitbulls are the problem then may I suggest you never own a dog. However, if you're like me and stand with pitbulls then maybe we should start our own petition, one that will ban bad owners.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
