"And every day, the world will drag you by the hand, yelling, 'This is important! And this is important! You need to worry about this! And this! And this!' And each day, it's up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, 'No. This is what's important." - Iain Thomas
This quote has recently been resonating in the back of my mind, so I figured I would enlighten you as to why this is so important to me.
We all lead different lives. We have our own set of characteristics, morals and values that make us different from somebody else. However, there is one underlying similarity between all humans, we are seeking a sort of happiness that may or not be accessible. This happiness or content comes from our hearts. It doesn't matter who is around to tell you that you're wrong for believing what you believe or for feeling what you feel, what is important is how you react to it. There comes a point in time when you just have to choose what you know is right no matter what everyone else believes to be right. Hence the part in the quotation where you yank your hand back . So often, we forget that important step and just let ourselves be dragged around by what the world believes. This is so detrimental to our beings and who we are becoming. While it may seem like no big deal to let people corrupt your mind with their ideas, you are actually damaging your morals and who you are. Why would anybody in their right mind sign up for something like that? And yet, we do it everyday without being aware of it.
I will be the first to admit that I am a worrier through and through. I can't help but always think about what I do and how it affects everyone around me, whether it be positively or negatively, without first thinking about if I should care. It's obviously important to know that what you do always affects someone, but you worrying generally doesn't help anything. My worrying about what people think will never be the action of change. That is separate. So why do I still worry? I had to learn that it is something I have to do on my own. I have to yank my hand away and say "No. this is important to me and I will not let you change that." Whether it be your religious beliefs or the way that you pour your milk before your cereal in the morning, there will be something wrong with everything you do if you look in the opinions of the world.
This single quotation helped me to realize that it's not just something I struggle with, it's something that everybody has to face in one way or another. So I guess the question now is, what will it take for you to yank your hand back?
