The 6 Stages of Winter at the University of Arizona

Everyone knows that one of the main luxuries that the U of A students get to enjoy is the perpetually perfect weather. So it should come as no surprise that the University of Arizona students are not too fond of cold weather…luckily we only have so many days during the year we have to endure the freezing 55-60 degree tundra. Since this year has been one of the coldest winters ever in Tucson we are all getting impatient to have our summer weather back. Every U of A student knows the stages of winter we all go through before its summer weather again in February.

1. Mourning pool party season:

University of Arizona students would live year round in their baiting suits if it was socially acceptable…some students even do it anyway (no judgment). But, when pool party season comes to an end we all take a little time to mourn one of our favorite pastimes. Although pool party season never truly dies, every time it raises to at least 70 degrees people are back in the sun and in their suits, even in January.

2. Making your friends at other schools jealous:

We are pampered with amazing weather pretty much all year long at the U of A, making our friends at other schools resent our posts on Instagram and Snapchat. They have to listen to us complain about the painfully cold (65 degree) weather that we have to walk to class in while they have to shovel snow just to get out of their doorway. Sorry, we’re not sorry?

3. The transition from wearing dresses out to jeans and a sweater:

At the U of A the Thursday night dress code, at least for girls, usually consists of a romper or dress with a sassy pair of pumps or wedges. It is quite the culture shock when girls realize it is too cold and start venturing out in jeans, sweaters and booties. Some women still brave the cold of the night in dresses and I applaud them, but once it gets below 50 I’m wearing jeans and two layers of sweaters.

4. Laying out the second it is sunny enough:

In these winter month's U of A students start to feel deprived of warmth and take any chance they can get to catch some sun. U of A students lay out the all year and winter barely stops them. They lay down their towels in the sorority courtyard, or sprint to the pool at the rec. on the days when it hits 70 and they thank the lord they go to the hottest school in the country.

5. Realizing they never turn off the AC at this school:

At some point it actually does get cold in the desert and we need to (for once) turn on the heaters rather than the AC. You walk through the freezing cold in a thousand layers just to get to your class and realize it is just as cold, if not colder, in your classroom as it is outside. It takes a month or so for all the buildings to realize it needs to be switched over to heat.

6. Once you can finally workout outside it gets too hot again:

Our rec. is amazing and nobody can deny that but some people really do prefer to workout and run in the outdoors. Sadly in Tucson the only time it is bearable to workout and run outside is at 5 a.m. or in these few short winter months. During this time you can go outside and enjoy a nice workout without melting in two seconds.

Once these stages are over, it is finally as hot as ever again and the U of A students are back to doing their regular shenanigans.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
