The Stages of Taking an Online Summer Class

~as told by "That so Raven"~

The Stages of Taking an Online Summer Class
Huffington Post

This summer I got this brilliant idea that I would be productive to the max. Not only was I going to work 8-3 Monday through Friday, but I decided to be bold, daring, even courageous. I decided to take an online math course. Sure, it may not sound that bad if you've never had the experience of online classes (specifically math) mixed with the sweetness of summertime. But it is.... Awful. So this is my warning to all of you summer-class virgins, stay that way forever.

Signing Up

Yay- look at you over achiever! You've decided you're going to knock out a few credits over the summer (just 'cause), and you're taking the class online so it'll be like wayyyy easier- right? Chances are you're super proud of yourself for figuring out a way to be productive without having to brush your teeth or put on pants! Props to you!

Getting the Syllabus

Oh... what's this? You begin to realize the absurd amount of work that meant to be done over a full semester is being shoved into four weeks time. You try to remain (falsely) confident in your abilities, and start to become slightly annoyed with your professor for expecting the impossible. But it's ok because you know you can do this!

Starting Your First Assignment

Reality begins to set in as start assignment one, and realize what you thought was going to take thirty minutes takes three hours. Not to mention you still have three more sections, two quizzes, and one chapter test to cover.

Realizing Teaching Yourself is Impossible

Three hours later, you're still on assignment one and it begins to hit you. Teaching yourself is hard. Like really hard, that's why people get paid to do it for a living. You come to face the fact you have no clue what you're doing and might be just a little screwed.

Calling In Back Up

You turn for help, and hope your friends that are also taking the class will have at least some sort of idea as to what to do... (but most likely they're just as confused as you).

Taking Your First Test

After eating, breathing, and sleeping math (or whatever subject it may be) for the past 48 hours straight you feel a sudden sense of relief and overcome with happiness.

Remembering the 3 Chapters, 2 Quizzes, and Test... Due Next Week

Your brief feeling of joy is quickly interrupted by feelings of panic, despair, and sadness as you say goodbye to your social life once again and dive right back into the books.

When Your Online Homework System Doesn't Save Your Answers

That's right. Your hours of hard work and dedication when you just wanted to quit are all thrown right down the drain because of a stupid computer. You hate technology and all things school related.

Being Forced to Give Up Your Social Life

You've gotten to a scary point where you eat, drink, and breathe all things school related. As much as you want to escape it...you cant. It's gotten to the point where you have dreams about your online class.

Remembering How Pretty it is Outside

Oh... that's right it's summer. You wouldn't know though since you're spending all of your time inside doing schoolwork on a computer. Every now and then it hits you how embarrassingly pale you are, or how nice it would be to lay out by the pool instead of sitting at a desk, but you smile through the pain.

Submitting Your Last Test

You're break out in your happy dance and cry a few tears of joy. You've made it, and couldn't be happier to sit back and relax, and enjoy summer like it's meant to be appreciated.

Realizing You Only Have a Week Until Classes Resume at School

That's right.... You've finally finished your torture and come to terms with the fact that summer is over (just like your online class). Oh well, you didn't get to do anything fun this summer or hang out with friends, but hey! You got those three credits in the bank- what more could a college kid want!

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
