Getting a roommate can be a wonderful, yet stressful, experience. From the searching for a roommate and planning your new home to the friendship and forever bond, there are stages that everyone goes through when getting a roommate, and what would be a better show than "New Girl" to describe those stages?
1. Waiting to find out or searching for the perfect roommate.
Whether you are in college or in the real world, finding the perfect roommate can be crucial—and very frustrating! However, once you meet the perfect person, you will know.
2. Planning how to decorate your new home, even if it's just temporary.
Pinterest is life! From what the new couch will look like down to which kind of forks you all will use, it will be all over your joint Pinterest board.
3. The awkward set of firsts.
The first time you brush your teeth together, the first time you get changed while the other person is in the same room, the first time you spend a night in together, and so on. There are so many different firsts that every roommate will eventually go through, no matter who they are. Most of these things will be awkward, just because you aren't close yet. Give it some time, and you will soon find out that it's not as awkward as you think.
4. Realizing you have things in common.
This is the most wonderful feeling in the world! Some people find out that they have things in common with their roommates the moment they meet, whereas some don't realize it until much further in the friendship.
5. Seeing their true self.
Once you get to this stage, there is no turning back. You are now comfortable being you around each other.
6. And learning to love their unique habits.
After being around them for so much time every day, you lean to love each and every little habit they have. OK, there might be a few habits that may still be weird or annoying, but eventually you will come around to at least not hate them.
7. Spending as much time as you can with them, because #NewBFF.
Even tough you spend so much time with them inside your home together, you both still love going out and doing everything outside your home as well!
8. Moving up to un-biological sibling status.
Sharing clothes, advice, fights and all! You have become so close that you are basically siblings. At this point, you may have your own set of friends that you spend time with on a daily basis, but you also will always have your roommate back home to spend the rest of the night to binge-watch Netflix in your sweatpants with!
9. Slowly starting to see how they have changed your life for the better.
They just walk into your life and change it upside down. Maybe they help you get out of your room and starting to hang out with more people; maybe what they did was to help build your confidence, or just console you when your down. Whatever it is, they will always be there for you and you know that! They have seen you at you at your worst and helped bring you back up to the top.
10. And start picking up some of their little habits.
I mean, you are around them so much. It's just a matter of time.
11. Crying because they had to leave the wonderful comfort of your little home and move out.
This is horrible, you know they will still always be there for you, but now it wont be in your shared space. (It also means looking for a new roommate.)
12. But still making sure you have weekly "family" dinners with them.
The anticipation to find any way you can to see your old roommate to spend some much needed time together! They are still your un-biological sibling, but now they just live somewhere else; and as hard as this can be, you have to let them go. It will make your relationship stronger and make your time together that much more special!
