Savannah has one of the largest St. Pat's celebrations in the United States. None of my non-Georgian friends understand why I get so excited about St. Paddy's Day. Without fail, no matter where I am, I will always get all decked out in green for this holiday... and I'll probably rag on you if you don't. Savannah, Georgia is so underrated when it comes to St. Patrick's Day.
Seriously. Whenever I mention St. Patrick's Day in Sav, the good ole 912, to my college friends, they look at me like I'm an idiot. "I'm sure the celebration in RVA (Richmond, Virginia) is so much better." Wrong. Nope. Incorrect. I promise you that Shamrock The Block (or any other U.S. celebration other than the few bigger) does not, and never will, compare.
You have not experienced St. Patrick's Day until you've woken up at 5 in the morning to ensure prime parade viewing, not been judged for drinking as soon as the sun comes up (and not stopping until it comes up the next day), left a big red kiss on every man in the parade's cheek, or gone to city market after the parade for festivities and music.
Honestly, this article is never going to be able to give justice to the atmosphere and feeling that Downtown Savannah has on this magical, Irish day. You'll just have to see for yourself. There's nothing better than good, intoxicated (of age), Irish fun in Savannah... except maybe actually celebrating in Ireland. That is why I will be wearing green this Friday, despite the fact that I'm at college in Virginia and have to go to classes all day.
