It's a Sunday night and you have two options: Netflix or homework. What do you do?
The answer is different for everyone. The answer is different depending on the day for each person. But one thing remains the same: the answer is always a difficult one to make.
You've spent the weekend doing weekend things with friends and you are supposed to buckle down. That's right. You've got to get your butt into gear, sit down at your desk, open your laptop and your textbook, refuse the temptation of Facebook, and get that brain a-thinkin', and those fingers a-typin'. Do it, I dare you.
Ooooorrr.....
(and this is big or)
You could open that laptop or switch on that TV for just one episode of your favorite 2000s TV sitcom or modern day drama. You could give yourself a much-deserved break-- after all you have been doing weekend life things all weekend! Maybe you got in a fight with your significant other or best friend, and you just need a break. Or better yet, and probably more exhausting, you had a great weekend full of activities with your best friends or SO! Or maybe you've been studying all weekend and you just plain old deserve it.
I'm here to tell you, that it's okay to be on either side of this spectrum!
We have all been here, with the angel (homework) and the devil (Netflix) on our shoulders telling us to do what we think is right. We all suffer through this practically every Sunday...(or sometimes even on a Tuesday when we're feeling lazy).
To the Netflix addict:
Maybe sit this one out. Try to go for a walk with a friend or read a book (it doesn't even have to be a textbook!). But maybe, just this once, take a short break doing something other than Netflix and get back to it. You don't have to accept the challenge when that "are you still watching?" message comes up.
To the A-plus student:
Take a deep breath, pour yourself a glass of something warm, and feel free to take a break, sit back, and watch something light-hearted for a couple hours. Getting your mind off academics for just a couple hours could give your brain the break it needs, and maybe even some breathing room for the kind of creativity that could spark your next genius idea!
Plain and simple, put the books/laptop down, and for Christ's sake, watch an episode of something fun. You can probably afford the brain cells you might lose watching Workaholics and the 2 hours it takes. Maybe that way you can inch closer to leveling the playing field for the rest of us!
To the lonely person:
Do both. Throw Netflix on with your favorite feel-good show (I recommend Gilmore Girls) and open up your laptop. Feel free to drown out the fast talking and girlish wooing enough to get that 3-page reflection done, but pay attention to the cute and lovey parts that are happy and wholesome enough to keep your spirits up!
To whoever might be reading this:
Throw Netflix on while you continue to read Odyssey articles, then maybe start your homework later. 'Cause, let's be real, that's what you were probably going to do anyway.
