Superheroes movies have been on the rise nowadays. Movies such as Deadpool (Feb. 12), Batman V Superman (March 25), and Captain America: Civil War (May 6) have been highly anticipated since their initial trailers premiered. This spring, fans will be able to watch their beloved characters fight and hug it out as theaters across the nation roll out the red carpet for these superhero blockbusters. What a time to be alive.
Laser beams are really cool to watch on the big screen; however, we shouldn’t take laser beam-less movies out of consideration when we’re trying to figure out what to watch. Here are a few movies coming out this spring with laser-beam-deprived protagonists.
1. Band of Robbers
This modern retelling of Huck Finn (Kyle Gallner) and Tom Sawyer (Adam Nee) has a distinct indie touch. Band of Robbers follows these iconic literary characters as they continue to plan heists and search for hidden treasure. Featuring Huck Finn as a former convict and Tom Sawyer as a corrupt police officer, Band of Robbers offers the promise of a fresh spin on a classic story. The film can be found in select theaters on January 15, 2016.
2. Everybody Wants Some
After Boyhood, writer and director Richard Linklater could have taken it easy drinking margaritas on a beach; instead, Linklater committed himself to the sports-comedy Everybody Wants Some, the spiritual sequel of Dazed and Confused. Set in the 80s, this film features characters donning era-appropriate outfits and mustaches. Everybody Wants Some looks alright alright alright. The film is set to hit theaters on April 15, 2016.
3. The Nice Guys
Featuring Russell Crowe as a hired enforcer who’s prone to badassery and Ryan Gosling as a hilariously inept private eye who’s prone to panicked screams, The Nice Guys looks like a dark and hilarious spin on the buddy-cop genre. Viewers expecting to see Gosling sprout sexy one-liners and cold steely stares will have to settle for his high-pitched complaints and girlish shrieks. Seriously, after viewing the trailer, I’m convinced that Gosling should go the Channing Tatum route and film more comedies; he has impressive comedic chops. This mystery-crime film, set in the 1970s, can be seen in theaters on May 20, 2016.
4. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
When watching Sisters, were you remiss over the lack of sand and war? No worries, your prayers have now been answered with Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, a comedy-war film featuring Tina Fey as a war correspondent in Afghanistan and Pakistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Based off the memoir of Kim Barker, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2016.
