I Hate Spring. Get Over It.

Can't we just skip to summer already?

Dear Spring,

Finally after a long winter full of sweaters, snowing, and hot chocolate, the sun has come out. It is now appropriate to wear short sleeve shirts and shorts, and time to retire the gloves and hats. Although spring is the start of a warm and fun-filled summer, I hate you.

First of all, trees and flowers are starting to bloom, which looks pretty but is terrible for the people with allergies. Trees, mold, grass, and ragweed are the most common to start an allergic reaction. 30 percent of adults and 40 percent of children have an allergy to pollen or mold. Having watery eyes, a runny nose, and a scratchy throat is no one’s idea of a good time. To anyone who has allergies: make sure you bring a pile of tissues before walking outside.

Remember "April showers bring May flowers?" Well, that can’t be any truer. Just when you are about to get excited about the warm weather, your hopes are destroyed when it starts raining. The rain doesn’t just ruin your plans for an afternoon, but it ruins your plans for the next day or two. Not to mention that your summer shoes are destroyed from the puddles you stepped in. Finally, when the rain has stopped, the humidity comes out. Humidity is your enemy, as it makes your hair frizzy and you feel gross.

Spring weather has no in-between. It is either on the verge of freezing or scorching hot. The worst thing about this season is that water in lakes and swimming pools are too cold that when it gets hot, you can't even go swimming! It's going to be 80 degrees in the afternoon, then 35 degrees at night, but then back to hot in the morning. Ugh.

Although hearing the birds in the morning is refreshing, the birds do not know when to stop. They chirp and chirp and chirp at the crack of dawn. And now that the warm weather has come, the bugs are here. Although it is nice to stay outside late at night, the mosquitoes are rather deadly and will leave you itching all night. Mosquitoes aren’t even the worst; bees, hornets, and wasps are out to kill.

Probably my least favorite thing about spring is daylight savings. After thinking you are going to have a full night of rest, you remember that you lose an hour, and your hopes are crushed. Now that your hopes are ruined, you are now an hour late to work or class. What is the fun in that? Why is daylight savings even needed? The November daylight savings is okay (mostly because we can sleep one more hour), but why the March one?

Honestly I think everyone would be okay without the 3 or 4 months of spring. I know I would. Why can't we just skip spring and go right to summer?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
