Spring Broke

Take a break without breaking the bank.

Spring Broke

Every year your average college students scrape up the money for over-priced security deposits they'll never get back. And for what? An overpriced beach house we'll be evicted from in 48 hours. If you are lucky enough to not be unfairly detained by the polite local police you'll still find your wallet making cricket sounds after shelling out your bro's bail for the MIP charge(s).

Don't get me wrong; my freshman spring break was one for the books and I loved every (other) minute of it. The unpleasant green beach house my sorority sisters and I holed up in to escape from the 40 degree “beach weather" is where my awkward-freashman-sorta-friends became my best friends. There was plenty of complaining, plenty of cops, and plenty of memories. However, not being able to stomach another SB in not-so-sunny gulf shores, I've decided to opt out of the typical LSU frat/srat spring break plans this year.

Want to give yourself and your wallet the spring break y'all deserve? Check out the list below of some not-so basic break options.

Camping: The cheapest of the cheap. Your wallet will truly thank you. Grab a tent, some beer (corrections: lots), and friends -- hammock optional but highly recommended. Bask in the great outdoors, take in a deep breath of REAL air, take a sorority-squat-sunset picture that requires no filter.

Cruise: Relatively cheap option for everything you get. Your squad and swimsuit is all you need. Most cruises are all inclusive and you'll make some pretty rad stops along the way -- we're talking Cancun, Jamaica, Bahamas, come on pretty mama!

“Break a difference": Spend your break doing some good instead of getting good and drunk. There are plenty of programs out there that offer spring break volunteer trips where you can give back and still visit one of a kind destinations and experience colorful cultures in your down time. Check out “break a difference" partnered with United Way or CrossCultural Solutions for options.

Rollin' with the homies: Take a road trip! To where you might ask? Anywhere! Pick out some destinations, some concerts, map a plan and let your inner wild child live.

I'll be spending my break on a road trip of sorts, completely invading my long distance best friend's life. UK is calling my name and with the final four coinciding with my spring break it's the perfect time to visit. Horse races, old friends, new friends, Nashville around the corner, riots, and fingers crossed for a championship (cuz cats). Best part is, at the end of the visit I get to come home to my own bed and spend the remainder of break taking a break (shocking, I know).

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
