Even though spring break is stereotyped as a time for college students everywhere to rejoice for the one week off of school and party it up, it is important to remember that these various destinations that students to travel to are someone’s home.
I went around to various hikes around Zion National Park, Coconino National Forest, Page, Ariz., and Boulder City, Nev. Despite the beauty of all the places I went to, I could not help but notice all of the litter. This got me thinking that if these places are out in nature, I can’t imagine the trash in places where people go to party, such as the beaches of Florida and Mexico.
The litter problem has gotten so bad on some beaches, they are ready to ban alcohol completely in places like Alabama. This has already been implemented on the beaches of Panama City. Not only have spring breakers caused a problem with litter, but underage drinking, numbers of arrest and vandalism go up drastically in these cities as well.
Spring break is a great time to unwind and take a break from class for a bit, but it is important to remember that it is not an excuse to a different city to act crazy and destroy the livelihood of other people.
Most college students are switching to being all about the environment, saving the planet and spreading nothing but good vibes. It is like the modern hippie movement. It is surprising to me that these are the same college students causing trouble and trashing nature. Next spring break, let's remember that having a good time does not mean to throw morals out the window.
