When people say "Spring break", usually the first thing that comes to mind is a week's worth of parties, beaches, and staying out later than you thought you ever could. Most college students book trips to the islands or the coasts in order to catch a break from the schoolwork that racks their brains all semester long.
However, this isn't the case for everyone. Some people don't have the luxury of travelling for these short breaks, and instead, find themselves at work.
I've been working since I turned 15 years old. First, at a large grocery chain, then to a school board office, and currently, at a local, organic grocery store. I'm used to hearing about my friends and their incredible vacations while I'm clocking in and out of my shifts.
To be honest, it used to really bother me. I constantly found myself asking, "Why do I have to work?", and "I'm young I shouldn't have to work all the time". But, in the end, I'm so grateful for these opportunities.
Many people mention to me that I have a very intense work ethic, always getting my work done and not hesitating to meet deadlines.
I can thank my work experience for this. I'm accustomed to listening to my managers, following rules, and getting my job done. Like I said, I started working when I was 15 years old, right in the middle of high school. I learned at a young age the importance of responsibility and independence.
I'll admit, when I was younger, I would spend my paychecks on meaningless things like witty t-shirts and books I'd never read.
But as time progressed, and I've become more engaged in my job, I've learned to budget. I keep track of the money I spend and make sure I am in a comfortable position to pay any loans I have each month.
While it can be frustrating to watch your friends go on vacation so freely while you're stuck inside working a 9-5 on a hot, Summer day, it's really important to remember all the life lessons that you're learning along the way. I wouldn't trade one second of my work for a vacation, because I know that I'm learning skills that I'll need when I'm older.
