Two words: spring break. Finally, a chance to relax and take a break from constant schoolwork and a heavy workload. Whether you’re going on an all-inclusive trip with a bunch of frat boys or taking a girl retreat to the beach, make sure you prepare yourself for the week ahead. Here are a few spring break hacks to help you survive the week:

1. Pack smart

Plan ahead what you absolutely need to pack and make a list to ensure you don’t forget anything. Make sure to include the essentials, such as any medications, sunscreen, sunglasses, deodorant, makeup, etc. on your list (an easy way is to organize your list into categories). Coordinate your outfits beforehand so you won’t feel frazzled having to put together a trendy look each morning.

2. Stick to a budget

You’ve already paid for your flight and hotel, but don’t forget to budget in the costs of food, drinks, Uber or shopping expenses that you’re likely to accumulate while on vacation. Decide what you’re willing to splurge on and prioritize what you need versus what you want. Some tips to keeping spring break low budget are bringing your own food (think oatmeal, PB&J, granola bars, solid fruit, etc.), renting a car and designating a sober driver (depending on how cheap this option is as it varies by location), making your own drinks, and making sure you packed all the essentials so you do not need to buy anything new.

3. Pace yourself

Don’t feel pressured to keep up with everyone around you, especially if you are on a trip with a large group of college kids. Don’t feel pressured to drink at all if you aren’t feeling up to it. Know you limits and don’t rush, especially if you are going to be drinking all day. Also, make sure to eat throughout the day!

4. Stay hydrated

Water will be your best friend during spring break. Make sure to drink a bottle of water when you wake up each morning and throughout the day. The sun, along with alcohol will deplete your body and next thing you know the dehydration will hit you. Switch up those daiquiris every now and then for a cold glass of water.

5. Relax

Spring break is meant for relaxation and revitalization. Take the time to catch up on sleep, detox and clear your mind. Read a book you are interested in while lying on the beach. You’ll realize how much you’ve missed delving into a book you’re actually interested in since you’re used to forced textbook readings.

6. Treat yourself

Whether it’s a mani pedi spa treatment, a mini shopping spree or an indulging meal, do something just for you this break. You deserve to pamper yourself every once in a while, and I guarantee you’ll feel revived afterwards.

7. Buddy system

No matter what happens, do not let yourself stray from the group ever. Being in an unfamiliar location alone, combined with the influence of alcohol, sounds like a terrible mix. Make sure to look out for your friends and recognize when you may need to help.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
