What It's Like Being In Your Hometown For Spring Break

"Spraaang breaaaak foreverrrrrrrr!" In every college movie, groups of friends always somehow go on sick vacations together over spring break to tropical islands where they eat, drink and get weird. If your friends are anything like mine, we always say that we are all going to go away and do something cool together, but then it is two weeks before break and no plans have been made so you are forced to go home. Going home for spring break is awesome, but gets old after about 12 hours of watching Netflix and binge eating your mom's homemade guacamole. Here is the process of being home for spring break:

1. After winter break, your group of friends promise each other that you are going to go away together.

In reality, you all know that none of you have the organizational skills, motivation, or will power to get a group of people together to even decide where you want to go. Secretly, you all know that it will probably not happen, and you'll be forced to fend for yourself.

2. The week before, you are looking forward to go home, but also dreading being bored for ten days.

After the stress of midterms, all you want to do is go home and sit on your couch and sleep for the rest of your life, but then you realize that there is actually nothing to do at home. The dreading begins.

3. Packing for home consists of sweatpants and more sweatpants.

You throw a pair of jeans and maybe a nice pair of shoes in your bag just in case your family drags you out to a nice dinner. Your next week is looking bleak because none of your friends from home have the same break as you, and there are definitely no crazy parties happening. Also, with all the good food you are planning on eating, you'll probably need some extra room in your pants.

4. You finally get home, see your bedroom, and it's like you never even left.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.... so much nicer and bigger than your cramped dorm room, and as soon as your head hits the pillow you sleep like a fat little baby.

5. When you're trying to fall asleep and you realize how loud everything is at college and how uncomfortable you are with the silence.

The quietness of no one being on the other side of a paper thin wall feels like the walls are closing in on you. Where is the rattling of the air conditioner? Where is the snoring of your roommate? Where is the constant flushing of a toilet?

6. Driving around your town, you remember all the good times you had in high school.

There's that house that my friends used to drink $10 vodka in! There's my best friend's house! That's my favorite place to get a bacon, egg and cheese! There's my high school! There's my ex-boyfriend's house..... Yikes.

7. Realizing that you watched every show on Netflix while procrastinating studying for your midterms.

Maybe you should have saved those last 3 seasons of Grey's Anatomy?

8. Checking social media and seeing everyone on vacation in tropical islands.

Hahah..... *instantly signs off*

9. Trying to eat healthy while you're home is nearly impossible.

"When I'm home I'm going to cleanse myself and eat so healthy!!"- Everyone. Suddenly you are presented with an endless amount of food which takes the place of all the alcohol calories you aren't drinking.

10. Texting your friends who are not on spring break to see if you can come visit them.

When I say texting I mean begging. Unfortunately, most of them are either still studying for and taking their midterms or about to go on spring break, so there is nothing going on. Lame.

11. Asking your younger siblings to hang out and realizing that they are still in school.

Do you want me to drive you to school? Do you want me to come take you to lunch? Do you need me to drop anything off? Please? High school man, never forget.

12. Shopping with what little money you have left to get some new swag.

Since everyone else is going to come back with a tan and crazy stories from their vacation, you at least have to get some new shoes on sale to show that you also did something productive with your week off from school.

13. Having your parents cook you your favorite meal on your last day home, and realizing that you are going to miss it.

There is nothing better than your mom's famous mashed potatoes, or your dads amazing burgers, but the best part of it all is spending time with them and catching up on everything they have missed out on since the beginning of the semester.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
