The world seems to have turned to a dark place. Of course, it always has been. Though, nowadays, with social media all up in everyone's faces, it has become easier than ever to spread hate and negativity. And, quite frankly, I'm sick and tired of it — as I'm sure a lot of people are.
With the many, many mass shootings, violent wars, natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and the rest of the long list of horrifying events that we have endured, there should be no room left for hate, rudeness, and unkind people.
It may sound stupid, insignificant, or even unimportant, especially coming from one random person, but it does not hurt to be nice! I cannot repeat myself enough.
Changing the way we think about others can actually be world-changing. If people didn't automatically create premature judgments about other people before we got to know them, or God forbid, judge others just by their looks, so many unexpected, yet wonderful, friendships could truly blossom out of that.
It seems like common sense to just be kind to others, but it feels as if no one knows how to do that anymore.
When my best friend and I used to go to One Direction concerts, we would write happy little notes (usually with sayings like "You're cuter than Harry!" or "I hope you get to be Niall's 'Girl Almighty'") that we would then tape to lollipops and hand out to other fans around the arena. My friend and I were not doing this to become best friends with a hundred other One Direction lovers, nor did we really get anything out of it at all other than the pure satisfaction of being able to make others smile. It felt absolutely wonderful to spread a little bit of happiness, even if it was just to other 1D fans.
Even after the two concerts, we did not stop there. My friends and I decided to write more happiness notes and leave them in random places around our local mall. Even though these were only tiny acts of kindness, it made us feel like we were actually spreading some good. They may have not taken much time or effort to create, but who knows — someone that may have found or received one of our notes could have had their whole day turned around.
Happiness spread in small doses is still happiness after all.
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in teenagers, specifically boys. However, that does not have to be a stable statistic! As lame and cliche as it may sound, a little bit of kindness can truly go a long way to turn around these numbers!
We do not need any more darkness in the world. Take thirty seconds out of your day to compliment a stranger, hold the door open a little bit longer to let someone in, or even pay for the toll of the car behind you. You never know how even the smallest bit of happiness may change someone's day.
