I have been playing softball since I was big enough to hold a bat. The past fourteen years have been filled with practices, tournaments, team dinners, and banquets. Now as my last tournament approaches it gives me a bitter-sweet feeling. My team is very competitive and has been very successful. One thing I'm proud of is that I can say that I am a four-time back-to-back Class-A Maryland State Champion. But don't get me wrong, this article is not me bragging about how great my team is. The purpose of this is to reflect on everything I learned.
I began my career at Churchville Lightning when I was only 10 years old. Now I am 18 and about to be a freshman in college. This program has grown into the woman I am today and there are countless people I have met that have helped me along the way. Right now I look at my trophy shelf in my room and see all of the accomplishments my team has had but I don't remember the games or tournaments, I remember the people and great memories.
To the coaches, teammates, parents, thank you. I know we have had our differences and there were times that I was so close to walking away then realized the real reason why I was there. Yes, the tournaments were important but I know I will have these friends for the rest of my life and I would not be the person I am today without them. I know I complained about the early mornings and the endless days when you just don't think you can swing a bat one more time but if I were to do it again I wouldn't change a thing.
Playing on a competitive club team for so long has taught me so much and I would recommend it to anyone, even if you aren't the star athlete. The bond you create with your team is so important and in the end, you only remember the good things. Thank you Churchville Lightning, much love and I'll miss you.
