Hobart and William Smith Colleges has finally established a Spoon University chapter, here in Geneva, NY. Spoon University is an international food publication geared toward college students, mainly sharing reviews of local restaurants and food on campus, recipes of all kind and short videos or pictures of delicious food. Spoon U also works to host and sponsor different events on campus.

Most students probably have heard of Spoon University, but might not know exactly what they’re all about. Originally started in 2012 as a student publication at Northwestern University, the two cofounders, Mackenzie Barth and Sarah Alder, constantly questioned their campus dining, the local restaurants, and loved to experiment with different recipes. They began an on-campus club and they have now spread their publication internationally. Spoon University is based upon three main values: community, integrity and exploration. The cofounders teach their employees, chapter leaders and writers to hold themselves accountable and incorporate these values into their local chapters.

The pending launch date for the HWS chapter is February 19 when the first articles will be published onto the HWS specific website, containing articles, pictures, videos and recipes. As of now, the social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram are up and bustling, connecting HWS to a community of foodies way beyond Geneva. You can find them at @spoon_hws; toss them a follow and a few likes.

The chapter has already accepted and trained their three leaders, which include the Event Planner, the Social Media Manager and the Editorial Director, fulfilled by Maggie Santinelli, Monika von Brauchitsch and Jane Donnabella, respectfully. All three leadership positions are working together to recruit writers, videographers, photographers and subcommittee members before their launch date. The goal is to bring the group up to about 20-25 people, with a primary focus on writers and photographers.

Jane Donnabella, junior at HWS, as well as a Communications major, is “super psyched about making [their] name known at HWS, upping [their] membership, and placing [the HWS] chapter on the top tier of Spoon U content.”

Spoon University takes pride in their important role educating and promoting the worldwide food movement all while becoming the food resource for younger generations. Jane Donnabella, the Editorial Director, explains how the induction of Spoon University on campus is “more than a new publication,” because the chapter is “tapping into the voices of a modern generation obsessed with food, a topic that appeals to all age groups and all audiences.”

Through local foods and restaurants in the community, Spoon University will help to make even stronger connections between HWS and the city of Geneva. So start counting down to February 19 and meanwhile, follow Spoon U on Instagram, Twitter and if you’re really feeling up to it, apply now!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
