This is a response to From the Crypt: Obscure Scary Movies for Fall.

When you Google "fall movies," the first thing you'll likely see is a long list of romcoms set in quaint, fall foliage-filled towns. The next is probably several horror movies that take place on or around Halloween. But what about when you're in the mood something in between? A cozy fall setting, with just a touch of eeriness? Here are five movies to scratch that specific dark yet whimsical itch.

Ginger Snaps tells the story of two outcast teen sisters dealing with the pains of coming of age- and one of them getting bitten by a werewolf. The exploration of girlhood in all it's tenderness and darkness makes this film a perfect watch if your genre of choice is "cozy with an edge."

The Craft

No whimsical-yet-spooky movie list would be complete without The Craft. This cult-classic explores the beauty of teenage girlhood and the special bonds made at that age through the lens of witchcraft.

Yes, this is technically a TV show. But with only 10 episodes clocking in at 11 minutes each, it's easy to binge. The story centers on two brothers lost in a strange forest, who must find their way home before being caught by a mysterious beast.

The Love Witch

This screenshot alone may make the best case for this movie. Beautiful costumes, lavish sets, and lots of blood and gore abound in this tale of a young witch looking for a fairytale romance.

Coraline

"Coraline"Laika

Coraline is a dark fantasy classic for good reason. The cute characters and whimsical animation style balance out the eerie tale of a young girl who discovers a seemingly perfect alternate world, only to discover its full of dark surprises.

With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
