There's several things you just know if you're classified as a band geek. You know how many exact steps it takes to make it from yard line to yard line on a football field. You know you'll have killer tan lines after a week of band camp. You know the difference between an oboe and an elbow (as well as where that reference comes from). Speaking of references, if you're a band geek, it's almost guaranteed that you'll reference a certain episode from a certain 90s animated children's show at least once during your band career.
The "Band Geeks" episode of "Spongebob Squarepants" accurately defines the life of a band geek. It's packed with dry humor, a rags-to-riches storyline, and lines that you and your band friends will be quoting for bus trips to come. The episode tells the band geek story from start to finish, so let's begin. "A 1, a 2, a skiddly diddly doo!"
1. "I understand that you have a dying animal on the premises."
The first day of band camp is always the worst. The ensemble's never played together before, so the music sounds like a musical adaptation of a Jackson Pollock painting, but as the saying goes, things have to sound worse before they get better. Yes, Squidward never quite got the hang of playing the clarinet, but there's hope for your band yet.
2. "I hope the audience brings lots of... ibuprofen!"
Not because y'all will sound terrible, but because you'll be rocking out both on the field and in the stands, obviously. Plus, it's always brass and the drum line's fault that there's a lot of noise, right? I mean, they are pretty loud..3. "Is mayonnaise an instrument?"
This is easily the most quotable phrase from the entire episode. It doesn't matter if you've seen this episode or not (if you haven't, well, that's another problem entirely); everyone knows where it comes from. If you're in band and have yet to quote this line to someone else, now's the time to do it. And no, horseradish is not an instrument either, for the record.
4. "So when do we get the free food?"
Band's a lot of work, okay? Therefore, band geeks are always hungry. Always. We like it even better when the food is free, whether it's snacks on the bus or a home-cooked meal before a game. That's why we're all here really. Um, and for the music. Obviously the music comes first.
5. "I know tensions are high..."
Understatement of the season. Right around the first game, people start to panic. Someone's uniform doesn't fit, someone else never got one to begin with, another person still doesn't know their music...it's an endless string of problems. Normally, fistfights like the one that ensued between Spongebob and other members of the Bikini Bottom Super Band don't happen, but when they do, it isn't pretty. Luckily, once all the kinks are worked out, people are much more chill.6. "That's his... eager face."
Sponge is probably thinking, "First game, oh yeah, first game, I'm ready!" Whether you admit it or not, he's you at every game and competition. You can feel the energy in the air. It smells like band, or maybe that's the bad concession stand popcorn. Either way, once the adrenaline kicks in, it's hard not to be excited to take the field and play your heart out.
7. "I'm sure that we can all pull together and discover what it truly means to be in a marching band."
Being in a band means forming a special bond with a group of people who were once all strangers, but are now some sort of music-loving, eight-to-five stepping family. Once the drill takes shape, the music is memorized, and the horn pops are snappy, it's game time. Now is the band's chance to show off all the blood, sweat and tears you've put in (literally). It's a miracle when it's all said and done, much like the Bikini Bottom Super Band came together for Squidward's sake when all hope seemed lost (spoiler alert), but you all did it, and you did it together.
And that is sweet, sweet victory.
