When it was announced that Tom Holland would play Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I was a little skeptic. I grew up with two people that played Spider-Man: Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
I remember watching the first "Spider-Man" movie all the way back in 2002. And that movie is what sparked my love for superheroes. To this day, Spider-Man is still my favorite superhero.
So when I saw this kid who is only a few months older than I am about to take up the role of Spidey, I didn't know what to think.
But, I was pleasantly proven wrong.
Looking back before Holland took on the Spider-Man role, I thought that Maguire and Garfield both had their positives and negatives. I thought Maguire was the better Peter Parker and I thought Garfield was the better Spider-Man. But, Holland played both Peter Parker and Spider-Man extremely well.
Although Maguire played a good Peter Parker, there were some flaws. For example, a big issue was the fact that Maguire's Peter Parker had already graduated high school and was going to college and working. Holland's Peter Parker is still in high school which, to me, is far better than working college student Peter Parker.
Holland's Spider-Man is better than Garfield's Spider-Man because he isn't a perfect hero. Garfield almost looked a little too perfect to be playing Spider-Man.
Part of what makes Spider-Man so relatable is that he isn't the perfect hero.
He makes mistakes. He's a flawed character and Holland captures that perfectly whether it's trying to stop a bank robbery to trying to impress Tony Stark.
So, we'll see Spider-Man again in "Avengers: Infinity War." Will he be able to be a hero or will he fail? That's part of what makes Spider-Man one of the best superheroes of all time - we're always kept guessing to see what the web-slinger will do next.
