The Spice Girl's single, "Wannabe," turned 20, on July 8. #Wannabe was a trending topic on social media and as a response, GEM, formerly known as Spice Girls, released this video teasing a reunion in the near future.
There isn't any confirmation of a reunion tour, but there is reference to a party taking place for the fans. The group renamed themselves due to Victoria Beckham (Posh) and Mel C (Sporty) not taking part in the reunion.
Since I grew up listening to the Spice Girls as a kid, I am still excited to hear the news about the reunion. The Spice Girls were a big influence on pop culture in the 90s and here are five reasons why.
1. Their Songs
"Wannabe" is 20-years-old, yet it is still popular today. I've heard it playing in bars in Boston, as well as a few different country's in Europe I've visited. Most of my friends in college know every single word to this song and belt it out whenever we hear it.
2. Their personalities
Ginger, Baby, Sporty, Scary and Posh all were named for their different personas and each dressed and acted accordingly. The variety in their personalities showed that there are many different types of women and that not everyone fits into the conventional feminine stereotype. It also made for a fun time because friends could decide which Spice Girl they were most like.
3. Their popularity
The Spice Girls have sold more than 80 million records worldwide and have toured in the United States, Canada, all over Europe and in Asia as well. They also had a successful movie, "Spice World: The Movie" and even performed at the 2012 London Olympics.
4. Their Style
Style in the 90s was always a little out there, but the Spice Girls seemed to have mastered it. With crop tops, animal print, pigtails and platform shoes, the girl group influenced the fashion industry one music video at a time.
5. Their Message
The Spice Girls were all about "girl power." Growing up with strong female role models in pop culture was huge for me. In a world where many females feel the need to compete with each other, the Spice Girls were different. What I liked best about their message was that "girl power" is not putting other people down to feel better, but it is supporting each other despite our differences. The group was made up of five girls with different personalities, and although they didn't always agree, they worked together to make music and have fun.
