I Spent Valentine's Day With My Parents

And It Didn't Suck

Valentine’s Day. Either your favorite or your least favorite holiday. Some people go out to a fancy dinner with their significant other, others stay in and cuddle, but the vast majority of people think that this day should be renamed “Single Awareness Day”. While I did not have a boyfriend on Valentine’s Day I did not hate the holiday. In fact, I have always loved Valentine’s Day regardless of my relationship status. This Valentine’s Day, my parents were my date.

Yes, that sounds weird to say, but it’s true. I spent the whole day with them. First of all, my mom works from home and I work with my dad, so I got to spend the work day with them. We told stories about how they met and made jokes about past relationships. My dad and my mom exchanged some of their favorite candy and my mom even got me a coffee mug with a stuffed animal and my favorite chocolate. I got to eat the chocolate at my home office in my pajamas while my new stuffed animal helped me work.

I ran a few work errands and went to a couple of accounts later in the day. Everyone seemed so happy. There were pink and red flowers lining hall ways and some of the employees had on heart shaped pins. All the happiness put me in a really good mood. My sister had to go to school, but we exchanged cute “wish you were here” texts and my best friend asked me to be her Valentine.

When I got home, I went to dinner with my parents. My parents don’t usually do something extravagant on Valentine’s Day to begin with, but the fact that they let me invade their dinner was pretty special. We got to get Chinese food (which makes any day better) and I got to touch base with my parents for more than 30 minutes in the morning during a cup of coffee.

When we got home we all sat in the den and watched TV. I was catching up on SVU and Grey’s Anatomy, my mom is binge watching The Good Wife, and my dad was watching a mix of 3 movies and some YouTube survival videos. This part of the night was pretty normal, but it just made me thankful. It made me think about how lucky I was to have a family that not only would let me hang out with them on a romantic day, but also is always there for me no matter what.

So yes, this day was pretty much like any other day, but I got to spend quality time with people that I love and I got to slow down and look at all the happiness that other people had. It also made me think about how I would rather have my sister, parents, and best friends as my Valentines instead of a boy who won’t answer his text messages and deletes me on Snapchat. Valentine’s Day is about being happy and being loved and feeling special and I did.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
